How I met Jesus: My Testimony Part I By: Timothy E. Davis I walked the aisle at 14 years old to accept Jesus Christ. It was a hot summer night at White Oak Conference Center. I had been trying to ignore the feelings in my heart. I tried to silence the Holy Spirit, but he showed me the shameful things I had done. I was covered in filthy, stinking sin. I ran down the aisle, when the Preacher opened the altar. Jesus Christ moved into my heart that day, and life has never been the same since! I was baptized at Northside Baptist Church, Orangeburg, SC. I felt the Lord’s call then, but did not answer it. But when I went off to college, I put God in a box on my shelf, taking Him out when I had an exam coming up, then putting him up when I went out with my Fraternity Brothers. I was using God like He was a spare tire. Or a vending machine, just drops a prayer in the slot, and get your blessing out the bottom. I move time forward to my career ending accident when someone rear ended the marked sheriff’s truck I was driving. This led to two back surgeries, a spinal cord stimulator, and narcotic pain control that I receive through a pain specialist physician once a month, and the stimulator team several times a year. I began to get depressed. Very depressed. Other troubling symptoms then followed. Then my mental problems escalated, partly due to the chronic pain I have. I found myself on 15 different mental health medications, and then God told me to stop. Cold Turkey. That can be life threatening, but I obeyed, and threw out every one of those pills. I stepped out in faith with God on that, and He drew closer to me because of it. More than a year later, my family doctor said “I am completely clear of any mental illness, and my past mental illness left no lasting effects.” Jesus Christ is still in the Business of Healing. Don’t believe the foolishness of those who say that God no longer heals, for I personally TESTIFY THAT THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST HEALED YESTERDAY, IT HEALED TODAY, AND IT WILL HEAL TOMMORROW! The power the Apostles had is still available today to those who seek it for the right reasons; to honor the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Miracles have not ceased, I am living, breathing, and talking truth of that! This was how I stepped out a little in faith and God responded! My wife and I found a solid Christian church that still teaches the truth. We began to tithe faithfully. That started the Holy Spirit moving in our lives. Because I had moved closer to the Lord, an amazing thing began to happen. I felt the call to the ministry, the same one I had ignored in High School. I was writing articles for our small church bulletin when God kept me up all night one night to write some articles about Him and His Kingdom. During that night, something amazing occurred. I received an anointing for his work. He blessed my small ministry, writing articles for our small church bulletin. I asked Jehovah to enlarge my territory, and, shortly after that, two of my articles were bought for publication in a Christian Newspaper, so Jehovah enlarged it in a literal sense, increasing the circulation of the articles about Jesus. I was also published in other Christian publications. I felt Him leading me to reach more people for Christ, so I had the website built as a place to display my articles, never imagining the response we would get. In eight months, we have received almost oover 30,000 hits, issued approximately 25 free emergency use cell phones, (to senior citizens, the disabled, and battered women) and collected and recycled almost 50 used cell phones, keeping them and their Ni-Cad batteries out of our landfills and drinking water. When you add all that up (website hits, article reprinting, reposting, articles redistributed, and articles sold and printed), we conservatively estimate approximately 50,000 people reached for Jesus Christ through Spotless Lamb Ministries, Inc. We had 50 hits from China our first month, before the government (apparently) blocked access, and last week, someone from Pakistan read about Jesus, risking death if they were caught. The Master continues to amaze me. He helped me adapt to the chronic and extreme pain in my back and find a way to serve Him. SATAN MAY BE ABLE TO SIT ME DOWN, BUT HE WILL NEVER SHUT ME UP. For I will preach Christ crucified, Christ born of a virgin, Christ the only way into Heaven, until I draw my last breath, and enter the gates of Heaven. God’s blessings for his ministry, (May it always be his ministry, never my ministry) just keep on coming. I will be interviewed by my denomination magazine, the IPHC Experience, about the ministry, and also I will be on television station WIS-Columbia on January 23 to discuss his ministry. So what is purpose of this ministry? What are we trying to accomplish through it? The goal of Spotless Lamb Ministries is to Preach, Teach, and Encourage through God’s Word. These groups usually drive older, less reliable cars, and a breakdown could be life threatening by leaving them at the mercy of any stranger who might stop. They can also be carried in a pocket in the event of a slip and fall accident, which kills many seniors each year. Frequently seniors, the disabled, and abused and battered women will have their telephone lines cut as a prelude to an attack or burglary. As a Police Officer for 18 years, I have seen this happen on several occasions, with tragic results. We also collect used cell phones, which we send to a partner ministry for secure and complete erasure of all data on the phone, similar to overwriting a computer hard drive with zeros before donating it. Several of America’s largest Corporations trust the process enough to donate their used cell phones. Then the donated phones are sent back out for use as emergency use only cell phones. This service is completely free to all, regardless of Age, Race, Sex, Gender or Religious Belief. Any eligible Senior Citizen, Disabled, or Battered Women and their shelters can request help. Most people, it seems, dream of trying their hand at novel writing. And for most people, that is as far as it goes. Why is that? Maybe they don’t have the time. (Though I believe we can always find time if we want to do something badly enough.) More likely, they simply don’t think that they have what it takes, as if writers were somehow a higher breed. If you have any doubts, here are what I consider to be the three major keys to successful novel writing… 1. Writing a Novel Takes Talent I’m not talking genius here. We can’t all be Dostoevsky. You simply need a love of language - a “way with words”, if you like. Oh, and a good muscular imagination won’t hurt you, either. Now, I don’t know you, of course, but my guess is that you wouldn’t be reading this article in the first place if you weren’t the daydreaming kind, and if you had the literary equivalent of two left feet. So far, so good… 2. Writing a Novel Takes Hard Work (and Plenty of it) Not that the work isn’t also stimulating and fun and amazingly rewarding. It’s just that you’ll never make it much beyond the first few pages if you prefer a gentler life. You need to be clear about the purpose of all this hard work, too. Yes, there is money to be made from writing fiction, but if it’s money that motivates you…well, let’s just say there have got to be easier ways of turning a buck. The same thing goes for chasing fame. The best reason for writing is to do it for its own sake. Write a novel because you want to write a novel. If you go on to sell it, that’s just the icing on the top. 3. You Need to Know the Novel Writing “Rules” (and Know When to Break Them, Too) This is the part of creative writing that can be taught, and the good news is that there is plenty of help out there. Go into any decent bookstore and you’ll find dozens of titles on the art and craft of writing novels. They range from the general to the specific (entire books have been written on Narrative Voice alone), and from the great to the frankly not-so-great. Overview Your editor should be an integral part of your writing team. Do not think of him/her as a judge, but rather as a resource to help you in all phases of the writing project. This article will help you overcome any fear of your editor, and how to effectively use your editor during the writing process. Beware of Your Editor Some of the changes that an editor might suggest could make the User Document more difficult for your Reader to understand. Improving Your Writing Once your editor has gotten past the basic mechanical editing tasks of: * grammar * punctuation * spelling * editing to a Style Sheet, he/she may work on “improving your writing.” Your editor may believe that one way to make the writing more interesting is to use synonyms when you refer back to something. Thus you might call something a “chip bin” in one part of your text, and your editor might suggest using a different term, such as “waste trap,” later in the document. This should make your writing “more interesting.” You do not want interesting writing in your User Documents! You want clear, simple, very easy to understand writing. If you make your writing more interesting by using the synonym (”waste trap”) then you force your reader to have to think about whether or not these are the same thing. I recommend that you use the exact same wording every place in your User Document where you are referring to the same thing. No synonyms here! If your Reader wanted to be entertained or have his/her thoughts provoked, then he/she would be reading a novel. Don’t let your editor make your writing more interesting or more clever if those efforts makes the material harder for your Reader to understand. Erudition Another place to beware of your editor is “erudition.” That is, when an editor that tries to make your User Documentation sound more formal. Other than disclaimer, legal, and safety information, the User Document should sound friendly, with a conversational tone. For example, an editor might suggest changing contractions (such as “don’t”) into their more formal form (”do not”). Don’t do it! Contractions are conversational and they should not be avoided. If you think about it, most people reading the User Documentation for any product are under some form of stress: * they either want to get on with using the product, or * something has gone wrong. A formal document will put the User off. The document should not be silly or flippant; however, it should provide the information that the User needs in a conversational, easily understood style. The needed information should be easy to find. Although most word processor grammar checkers are woefully inadequate, many of these checkers can be made to provide a readability score (you may have to set an option to enable this feature). Editing should help increase the readability (indicated by a decrease in the reading grade level) of the document. If editing increases the reading grade level, ask your editor why that score has changed. What to Do Provide your editor with the information that will enable him/her to do the best job. Here are some things to tell your editor: * The intended audience for the User Document * Tell your editor that you want an informal style of User Document * What style manual or guide to be used in editing * Scheduling and progress of the project * Format for sharing and editing the text (make sure the editor can read your electronic documents — do this when you hire the editor) (Whenever you are dealing with someone outside your organization, you must have a signed non-disclosure agreement. This is in addition to any other contractual items between the outsider and your organization.) Get to Know Your Editor Your editor is NOT your school teacher. In your school days, your teacher-as-editor was a judge. Your goal was to impress your teacher with your writing. You were working for a grade. Thus you may have come to fear your editor. Change your thinking! Now, your editor is on your side. Your editor will work with you to produce the best possible writing. You will not have to worry excessively about grammar. You goal is to get the information “on paper” as clearly and completely as you can. Your editor will suggest changes to polish the text. So don’t fear your editor. Make your editor part of your writing team. Love Your Editor Hire Your Editor Early in the Project Hire your editor early in the life of the project. There are at least two benefits to hiring the editor early: * First, your editor will be prepared for the editing task. He/she will have had time to get to know the product, target audience, and your organization’s style guide. * Second, your editor can help you with your writing, as I describe below… Let Your Editor Help You If you run into problems about how to write something, call on your editor. Most likely your editor can provide an effective wording to get you around your block. That’s one reason why you got the editor on the project early. Here’s another… A Recommendation I recommend that you work on small pieces of the User Document, and circulate these small pieces (rough drafts) to the development team for comments. Then use their comments to improve the writing, and re-circulate the improved material. Continue this for a few cycles. I call this “Iterative, Interactive Writing.” This is an effective method for writing quickly and accurately. If you feel uncomfortable about circulating rough drafts to the product development team for review, here’s a solution. Have your editor perform a quick edit of the rough draft before you circulate it for comments. Your “drafts” will look quite good, and the development team will concentrate on the content, not the wording or grammar (and comments about content are you want from the team). The Bottom Line Don’t think of your editor as an enemy lurking at the end of your document production path. Instead, realize that your editor can be a valuable member of your writing team, and is on your side. He/she should: * Be brought onto the writing project early * Be kept aware of the status of the writing project * Be used as a writing, as well as an editing, resource TIP: It is much more enjoyable for the writer (you) to work with “marked-up” electronic documents, rather than marked-up printed documents. Investigate your word processor’s “multiple reviewers” capability. To employ this capability requires that you and your editor use the same or compatible word processing software. Attention, Curiosity, Excitement, Specificity. In other words, write your sales letter as if you are writing an emotional letter to your best friend about your product or service. Keep writing and don’t stop to correct mistakes until you can’t write any longer. If you use informal language, so be it. Anything that makes your sales letter seem more personal will make it more compelling. Write short sentences and paragraphs. Keeping your paragraphs short and simple will help you to increase the readership of your sales letter; The easier it looks to read the more likely they are to read it and buy your product! People are lazy, make it easy. Please note…I didn’t say, make your sales letter short, I said, “keep your sentences short.” Use subheads. Subheads are like mini headlines. Heck, many of them ARE in fact headlines that you wrote earlier. Just make sure they work seamlessly with your copy. Subheads are used to break up long copy and drag people deeper into your words.
