Do you ever feel like you have some great ideas, but when you sit down to write them, they’re not so great? Or even worse, you can’t really get a sense of what the ideas were? In one of my graduate student coaching groups we have been discussing the difficulty of translating partly formed ideas into words on paper. One technique that makes use of a normally underutilized part of our brain is called “Mind Mapping.” What is a Mind Map? Tony Buzan, who created the word “Mind Map” and has written extensively on it, describes it as a powerful graphic technique that makes use of the way our brains naturally work. He says it has four characteristics. 1. The main subject is crystallized in a central image 2. The main themes radiate from the central image as branches 3. Branches comprise a key image or key word printed on an associated line. 4. The branches form a connected nodal structure How Do You Mind Map? Mind mapping is best done in color. If you have some markers or colored pencils, and a sheet of white paper, you’re ready. If you don’t, just use what you have. Start with the central idea that you are trying to wrap your mind around. It could be the big picture (e.g. your next chapter) or a smaller idea (e.g. the next few paragraphs.) Write it down in one or two words at the center of the paper, and draw a circle around it. If there is a symbol or picture that you can put with the words, sketch that in. The idea is that you are activating the non-verbal side of your brain. The quality of what you draw is not important, since you will be the only one seeing it. The same is true for the ideas you come up with. Don’t edit, just put in what comes to mind. There are no rules for the way to proceed from here. I tend to break rules, anyway. The way my mind works, I start thinking of related ideas, categories, and ideas, which I write in little circles surrounding the circle in the middle. I then use lines to connect them. Tony Buzan likes to draw curved lines emanating from the center, and write the related or associated ideas on the lines. The result looks like a tree emanating from a central spot. My technique looks more like a bunch of lollipops. As you continue to add associated ideas to your outer circles or branches, you continue to draw the connections. You will notice as you fill them in that there are cross connections that appear. I find it helpful to draw lines between those interconnecting ideas. How Does a Mind Map Help? The brain is an associative network, and the right hemisphere (in most people) is responsible for non-verbal, visual, associative and much creative thinking. Normally when writing, we are mostly making use of our left hemisphere, which tends towards the analytical, one-thought-at-a-time approach. Our internal thoughts, however, are not shaped like that. Thus we have a roadblock as we try to get our brilliant thoughts on paper. By using a Mind Map as a starting point for thinking, you can bypass the blockage and feeling of overwhelm caused by overly analytical thinking. The Mind Map allows you to see more than one thought at a glance, and in doing so helps clarify your thinking. It shows the way ideas are interrelated (or less related than you thought.) It allows more access to creative, non-linear parts of your brain. How Can Grad Students and Professors Use Mind Maps? At this point, you’re probably thinking, “How is it that Gina writes so brilliantly and clearly? How does she keep all her creative thoughts straight?” The secret is that I use Mind Maps to write my articles. So it’s not a high IQ but my Mind Mapping skills that got me where I am today. Here are some helpful ways to make use of Mind Mapping. 1. Use it for brainstorming ideas for your proposal or new research project. 2. Make a Mind Map of your next chapter or the one you’re currently stuck on. 3. When planning your career, make a Mind Map to show the pros and cons of your available options. 4. Use a Mind Map to take notes. 5. Mind Mapping can help keep you awake and interested in your subject. 6. Prepare for an upcoming meeting with a Mind Map and use it to explain your ideas. 7. Use it in teaching, both to prepare classes and for handouts. Play around with Mind Mapping. Fairly well known cities and areas around the Puget Sound include Tacoma, Bremerton, and the Kitsap Peninsula. Bremerton houses the Naval Museum while Tacoma shows off its Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Also contained in the Tacoma area are the Washington State History Museum and the Tacoma Art Museum. Washington State enjoys a fairly large number of both hunters and anglers. In 1990 there were over five hundred licensed charter boats off the coast and in the Puget Sound. Some of the various ports attuned to the recreational aspect of fishing in Washington and Oregon include Neah Bay, Newport, Charleston, and Winchester Bay. The most popular catch of fish is of the salmon family, specifically chinook and the small coho salmon. In Washington State in 1991 there were 301,900 people who hunted with the east central region being the largest contributor and the Puget Sound region was the highest in the number of sport fishermen throughout the state. Many historic sites and parks pepper the Washington landscape including Whitman Mission National Historic Site near Walla Walla, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, San Juan Island National Historical Park, and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in Seattle. The Makah museum in Neah Bay makes its mark by displaying many recovered items from the mudslide that buried an ancient Makah village 500 years ago. Many designated recreation areas that include lakes were established by the National Park Service including Lake Roosevelt, Ross Lake, and Lake Chelan national recreation areas where many campers come to experience the outdoors. The picturesque beauty of the Gorge at George is the perfect backdrop to the ongoing concerts that plague that town. Elsewhere in the central Washington region one can find within Okanogan County the controversial Omak Stampede and Suicide Race that happens ever year in August. Western Washington’s Puyallup Fair has become a tradition with many people and is easily the largest in the state. Seattle is home to three major sports teams including the Mariners, the Seahawks, and the Supersonics. Considered one of the most beautiful baseball fields in the major leagues, the Mariner’s Safeco field sports a retractable roof for baseball enjoyment in any weather condition. Seahawks Stadium is brand new with a completion date of 2002. One of Seattle’s most popular day trips is the quick ferry ride over to Victoria, British Columbia where one can spend the day taking in the English atmosphere and just 13 miles north of there is the Butchart Gardens. It maintains 50 acres of formal gardens and hosts firework shows and concerts. There are places for outdoor recreation even within the city of Seattle including hiking, kayaking, biking, and windsurfing. One of the largest outdoor recreation outfitters in the nation, REI, resides in Seattle. Recreational biking can be achieved through, among other places, the use of the Burke-Gilman Trail that winds from Ballard to Log Boom Park in Kenmore on Seattle’s Eastside for a length of 16.5 miles. The trail extends another eleven miles to Redmond’s Marymoor Park but under a different name. Another long trail through the Seattle area is the combined 19-mile trail of the Alki Trail and the Duwamish Trail. If independent biking is not desired there are cycling clubs including the Nation’s largest called the Cascade Bicycle Club with its 5500 members. Several miles of trail exist within the city for hiking in Seward Park and the 534-acre Discovery Park offers an extensive network of trails. In Corrogue I am seeking the source of inner beauty. This is a way to find an inner beauty that transforms. Then it will allow entry into that other room beyond what we call in Ireland “a thin place.” It will allow me to see banquet moments that are always available in the only time we have. This is the time of now. It will allow me to feel my essence and what is essential to life. I will recognise that my essential self is the moment-to-moment experience of inner beauty. This is provided I know how to look. Let me share with you seven reflections that may assist you in getting in touch with that inner beauty that you always are. 1. Inner Beauty mean you acknowledge you are not who you think you are Inner beauty is your essence. It does not come for your persona or your “thinking about.” Your personality is like the light of the moon. This light of the moon is beautiful but the source of the moonlight is from the sun. The moon is merely a reflection of the true light. The light of your being is powerful beyond any “thinking about.” Start “to be” more and “do less.” The hard part is that this requires trust. Trust more and learn from your “inner telling sense.” This means trusting the sense of the body. 2. Inner beauty means you know. We focus our energies outward. We look for satisfaction instead of joy. We accept belief but do not venture “beyond belief.” This inner beauty that you are is beyond any belief system. This inner beauty is your birthright. It is your psychological and spiritual “homeplace.” It is your place of belonging. You will not find this “homeplace” in the outer world. This outer world is only a reflection of the distance we have come from our inner beauty. Spent ten minutes each day in focused silence. This can be when you are walking, sitting, eating or at any time that best suits you. 3. Inner beauty means you are forever enough. In this 21st Century of noise and haste you are focused on the dynamic of “never enough.” Our societies main focus is ensuring that you never get to “feel enough.” If you get to feel enough it might then mean the end of economics. You get little time to rest in your soul. This is the place of real recreation. This is the place where every day is a holy day. These words “holy day” are the original meaning of the word “holiday.” You do not have to leave home for exotic or non-exotic experiences. You can travel the world of inner beauty without ever going anywhere other than your heart. You can go on holiday to your “homeplace” at anytime. Just take a moment. Sit still and breathe in and out slowly. Become the fine being you always are and learn to know you will always be fine. Commit to knowing life and give up the limitation of belief. 4. Allow your inner beauty to flow. As a writer I authorise this free flow of life’s energy moving through this body. When I write I am the experience of allowing. I am not intent on going anywhere. When I write there is no sense of wanting. There is only surrender to flow. I sit before this fireside having a chat with my soul. Energy moves freely through “little me” when I let go and let be. This is inner beauty. This is free expression of the soul. Soul expresses through talent. Discover what it is you love, and then, as my beloved poet Rumi advises, “Risk all for love.” 5. Inner beauty is not defined in words but felt in the body. Inner beauty is not to be debated. Inner beauty is not definable. It does not belong to “you” or to “little me.” It is not “my” beauty. I do not own it. One can make oneself look physically beautiful and this is a delight. Yet all outer beauty fades with time. Inner beauty develops with age and is timeless. It develops and is embraced with wisdom and understanding. Beauty proceeds from the inside out. It means honouring the inner beauty of this body. The delight of inner beauty is erotic and not just cerebral. For one moment each day lose your head and fall into the heart. 6. Inner beauty is the expression of love. Inner beauty is the expression of love and compassion. It begins with awareness of each moment just as it is. This allows one to recognise the destructive power of judgement. Each moment is beautiful. Inner beauty is the experience of presence without this experience needing to be other. We spend much of our time dividing our experience. In this way we filter out any experience of joy. We are like a battery that is afraid of being struck by lightening. We are made for joy but within our social consciousness the energy charge of joy would literally blow our minds. The experience of unconditional beauty would leave us feeling burnt out. Inner beauty requires you to be vulnerable. Take a moment this week to allow your feelings to be feelings without judgement. 7. Inner beauty is nothing special. Inner beauty is the experience of no thing. It means being prepared to be empty in order that the Beloved can pour unconditional love into this empty space. You cannot grasp inner beauty. You have, metaphorically speaking, to keep the window open. This is the window of your heart. All you are asked to do is be attentive. Allow the free flow of grace to enter. When the moment comes you will know. You will know that you are the beauty you seek. When you know this you have returned home. You have returned to what is called in Ireland “the homeplace.” This is a place of reverence and belonging. This is your special place. Be your longing. Be beautiful. Look inward and find the source of beauty that you truly are. This will give you a glimpse of the timeless wonder you are. You will disappear. You will go into a beautiful experience beyond belief. Sezibwa falls is traditionally derived from the vernacular word “sezibibwa kkubo” meaning “no obstacle can stop me from moving on.
