By virtue of study, and discipling by the Holy Spirit, here is a previously undisclosed fact about Jesus Christ: Keep in mind that —> “sin causes death”. Without sin, there would be no death [as the eternal condition, in our new, ageless, prime-forever, spiritual bodies will prove out when believers inherit them]. Christ, as the Creator, was able to pay for ALL sins as the only [blemish-free lamb-sacrifice] sinless person on the planet. And since He made us all, he could die for us all…the only one who could do that. …..Let’s say that instead of starting his ministry in his prime (30 years old), he waited another 30 years, for the people of Israel to know him better, and the current crop of Pharisees to die out. During those years his disciples would have grown into gray, old men while he stayed a forever young-looking 33 year old. Since He was sinless, he could grow to his “prime” and stay there (literally forever, if He had not sacrificed himself). And because He died without sin, death could not hold him; therefore, all of us in the Body of Christ [these last 2,000 years] that were with him spiritually, on the cross/buried/resurrected, receive & share the new life when He resurrected; this is what we get when we are “saved” {Romans 10:9}. Eventually, had God not chosen to die at 33, He would have been considered a freak that could not age; and people would have either worshipped him for the wrong reason (not for his “word”, but because of what he looked like as the perpetual young man), or they would have killed him out of envy! So, as in all other things, God is also the master of timing! James Sorrell [CaptainChurch]

We often speak of writing “style,” which in reality is not one concept but four. I recommended Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style as a guide to general or “correct” writing style. That’s the first concept of “style.” The other three are: Group or “our” style Individual or “my” style Structural style Group style is the subject today. A book you may have to consult much more frequently than Strunk and White is the style manual used by the organization you’re writing for, the book whose purpose is to make sure published articles are consistent within a publication or among several publications. In recent years, every company I’ve worked with has adopted The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual as its bedrock decider on matters of style. Within its 300-plus pages you are told: o Not to use a comma before the “and” or “but” in a series–e.g., Attendees were Mary, Martha and John. o To spell out all whole numbers below 10 and to use figures for 10 and above, o To capitalize Hades but not hell, o To use gale to describe “sustained winds within the range of 39 to 54 mph (34 to 47 knots) o That pingpong is a synonym for table tennis, and Ping-Pong is a trademarked name, and o A lot of other stuff that seems to cover the Universe As We (Should) Know It. Be aware that the first rule cited above runs counter to Strunk, who felt the final comma was needed to avoid confusion. I find it interesting that several editors I know whose official arbiter is the AP guide are unaware of its comma rule. (I know this because I’ve had them insert the things in my copy!) My first full-time writing job was with a department that had its own style guide. Other than specifying how to treat department and division names and job titles, it had only three rules: 1. Follow Strunk re commas. 2. Use “employe” rather than “employee.” 3. Follow the AP Guide for everything else. In the three years I worked for that company, I never got used to either of the first two rules. But I obeyed them. Group style–agreed-upon usage–is not negotiable. Think about it as good communication manners-and not institutional repression (or cramping) of “your” style. Many publishers will no longer accept a proposal unless it comes from an agent. While agents don’t guarantee your book will be published, they can ensure that it gets a reading and advocate for you all along the process. You can find the right agent for you if you know where to look. Why use an agent An agent … * will critique your book proposal before it is submitted and make suggestions or edits to help you improve it. * knows which publishers are likely to be interested in your proposal. * can garner attention for your proposal and sell it faster than you can. * is your business representative and, as such, protects your best interests, secures advances, settles contract disputes, collects money, reviews royalty statements, ensures that publishers meet their contractual obligations, and host of other activities. * is your support system, guide, and cheerleader, which every author needs. * can bring a new editor up to date on you and your book if that becomes necessary. * only earns money when he or she sells your book proposal, which is a great motivator. * is your closest ally in the publishing process. How to Find an Agent * Start online by looking up The Association of Authors’ Representatives (AAR), a not-for-profit organization of qualified literary agents. AAR provides resources to its members and protects the best interests of their clients. AAR agents are obligated to uphold integrity and the highest professional standards in all of their business dealings. Do not consider an agent who does not meet the rigorous standards of the AAR and the National Writers Union (NWU). * Check out on line and print directories. Jeff Herman’s book, Writer’s Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents, is invaluable. His online directory also lists agents’ e-mail addresses and websites. Writer’s Digest Books Guide to Literary Agents and Literary Market Place (LMP): The Directory of the American Book Publishing Industry are excellent sources and may be all you need. * Hardcover and trade paperback publishers produce catalogs to send to booksellers, libraries, and sales reps, which often include agents’ names and contact information. Browse bookstores shelves in the sections where your book might be. Check the dedication and acknowledgment pages of competitive books to see if the authors have thanked their editors and agents. * Let agents find you by getting your book published or publishing it yourself, then making sure the media knows about it. * And, of course, network, network, network. Go where writers and agents are likely to be, such as writing classes, readings, lectures, seminars, book signings, conferences, and book festivals. Join writers’ organizations, and attend meetings. Talk to people who have been published. Ask if they have used an agent, and don’t hesitate to request referrals. In my experience, writers are generous folks who are more than willing to share such information and support each other. What do agents want from you? Agents have different policies about what they want from potential authors. Most agents prefer the initial contact be made in writing. They may want anything from a one-page query letter to an entire manuscript. Check the agent’s policy before making any submission. Obviously, whatever you send should be neat, organized, accurate, and well written. This is your first impression; make it a positive one. A query letter is a one-page document that must entice the recipient to want to know more about your book. It is by definition concise, so every word must count. Its job, like that of a good resume, is to get you in the door. To do that, it must be informative and inviting — both steak and sizzle. In essence, a query letter is a mini-proposal, an encapsulation of your most salient points on a single piece of paper. A solid query letter is not something you dash off. It takes a great deal of thought and often many revisions. The agent not only wants to know what your book is about and why you are qualified as the author, but also how well you write. This letter may be the single most important piece of marketing you will do. How to deal with an agent, once you have one According to Lori Perkins, author of The Insider’s Guide to Getting an Agent (Writers’ Digest Books), there are ways to treat an agent and ways not to. On the plus side of the ledger are simple courtesies like saying thank you; keeping them posted on developments as they occur; educating yourself about the publishing industry; and, though it should seem obvious, always being completely honest. On the other hand … * Don’t expect miracles or the impossible. It’s in everyone’s best interest to sell your book. * Don’t second-guess their decisions. Agents will do everything possible to make you feel special and to get you a good deal. * When the deal doesn’t meet your expectations, don’t shoot the messenger. * Don’t be pushy about money or contracts. Pressure doesn’t speed up the process. * Don’t expect your agent to teach you to write, advance you money, or act as your attorney, therapist, or publicist. * Finally, if your agent thinks you need to do more work on your book or proposal, don’t be a prima donna. Ridley Pearson, the best-selling mystery writer, tells a story about a writer he referred to his agent. When the agent suggested some changes, the writer took offense and said no. He never got his book published, by the way. In this age of specialization, literary agents are no exception. Like doctors, they have specific niches. When you do research, begin with your particular genre. There’s no sense sending a query letter or proposal to someone who is not an expert in that area of nonfiction. Narrowing your search will increase your odds of success. Bobbi Linkemer is a ghostwriter, book-writing coach, and editor. She is also the author of 14 books. Term paper writing is one of most common requirements for an upper-division course such as one for which this book was probably assigned. Such term papers usually count for a significant part of their final grade. Up till now many, maybe most, students have never received formal instruction about how to write a good term paper. The following pages are meant to help students write an “A” paper by giving students some guidelines about how to go about their Term paper writing. To write a term paper students must first do some term, that is, investigate their topic by reading about it in many different sources, including books, magazines, newspapers, and the Internet. In some cases students may also conduct interviews. The information students gather from these sources is then used to support the points students make in their paper. Term paper writing also involves documenting their sources of information in footnotes or endnotes. This way the reader knows where students got their information and can judge whether it is reliable. Why do teachers give papers? Answering this question is a good place to start thinking about term papers because if students know why papers are such a common assignment, then perhaps students can approach task with added enthusiasm and dedication. When talking about term papers, students don’t ask, how to. What students must ask is what to. A term paper is a semester task. Some teachers prefer it as a summary work to show whether materials studied in class were first of all noted down carefully, second of all

Choosing a good niche subject to base your website around is one of the most important aspects of making money off of your articles. This will give you a foundation to build from and you can target one general audience with a pack of keywords that they are most likely to be searching for. You should take each one of these keywords and use it for the basis of one article on each page. This way, even though you are targeting one specific subject, you will be sure to interest a wide variety of people in that one niche. They may also find other pages that interest them, which will keep them returning to your site to learn new information about the niche subject. The best way to find keywords for your niche subject is to use a keyword software program and type in the word that is the subject of your niche. This will generate a list of keywords or phrases that contain your niche and will also show you approximately how many people search for each word or phrase. Some software programs may also tell you how many sites are out there to compete with for each word or phrase (this will help you know if those sites are worth competing with for the number of searches out there). You then deicide which of these would be most profitable by determining which have the least amount of competitors, so that you have a chance at making it to the first or second page of search engine results, but that also have a decent amount of people looking for that keyword or phrase each month. These will be the keywords or phrases that you will base the pages of your niche site on. If there are a number of topics that you like, pick the one that you feel would be easiest to start with and then, once that site is built and generating some revenue, you can start another site. The most profitable website marketers, who use their talent of finding niches and combining that with good site content and a handful of affiliate links, have a good amount and variety of niche sites that they have started. You are never limited in what you can do with niche website marketing, unless you find out that you do not have the marketing skills or the needed funding to make it happen. Otherwise, the sky is the limit! I do, and before you start any blog, you should, too. Why would you want any blog reader or your subscribers to think you don’t really know what you are talking about? Don’t comment on something you know nothing about, don’t review a product you haven’t actually tried, and don’t even think about writing a blog entry without some sort of research being done. I always make sure what I am writing about has been researched upon. This may be through personal trial-and-error and experience, or through intense research from other sources, or preferably both. In some cases, I’ve spent 5 or 6 hours researching and putting that research down into a blog entry. Get your information from a relevant source. Because Money and Blog is a blog about making money, mostly from blogs, a lot of the information comes from other blogs in the same niche. I also get much information from my university’s marketing and advertising text books. If you had a blog on classical arts or English, you might find much more information in academic essays through a local university, at a library, or at online directories. If you have a blog on reviewing video games, you should be prepared to spend the time and money purchasing/renting the game and playing it to the end, and take notes through the whole process. Taking journalism courses will also help you develop how to write for those reading your topics. Never explicitly state you are a novice or “not an expert” on your topic. This raises a huge, red flag to the reader. Notice how that is in quotes? I have seen it, and every time I do see it, I laugh and click that blue x in the upper-right hand corner. It immediately tells me you have no idea what you are saying and I have no real reason to follow the words you’re entering in your blog. Sometimes, your readers may comment asking you a question that delves deeper into your blog. Never answer with an “I don’t know.” Find an answer for them. Make an educated guess. Link them to another source where they can research on their own. It will keep your subscribers coming back, knowing their future questions will be answered just as concisely. If you aren’t an expert, don’t come off like you aren’t. Let your readers think you are. I wouldn’t recommend lying, especially for new blogs, as that may come back to haunt you. Just don’t admit you are a novice in your topic. Everyone is capable of doing research, and when great research is done, you can write an excellent blog like any true expert. Writing a blog without research is just as bad as doing it on your senior thesis project: bound for failure.

When I am introduced at social gatherings, the host or hostess usually says: “Hi, I want you to meet Philip Yaffe. He is a professional writer.” I almost always get the same response: “Oh, really. What type of novels do you write?” In other words, people automatically associate the term “writer” with “literature”; as if fiction were the only type of writing. It isn’t. And for most ordinary people, such as myself, it is the least important, yet it always seems to take pride of place. Scholastic snobbery has a lot to do with this. Virtually every secondary school and many universities require students to take courses in literature. However, virtually no one who takes such courses will ever write a novel, a stage play, a film script; or any other form of fiction. On the other hand, few schools and universities require students to take courses in writing non-fiction. Yet virtually everyone needs these skills to produce reports, memos, letters, marketing plans, company newspapers, and all the other types of non-fiction texts essential for getting on in life. Internet searches for quotations about writing almost invariable turn of the thoughts of novelists, poets, playwrights, etc., again as if fiction were the only category of writing of any consequence. I made such a search in order to put together this article. At first I was disappointed by the lopsided results, but on further reflection they turned out to be quite fortuitous. I normally make a strong distinction between “creative writing” (fiction) and “expository writing” (non-fiction). In fact, this difference is the foundation of a book I recently wrote on the subject, where I explained how and why they are truly very different genres. Nevertheless, when reviewing the quotations, it became apparent that the feelings and emotions of good writers in both genres are remarkably similar. Thus, whether we are creative writers (the tiny minority of us) or expository writers (the vast majority us), we can all learn something from these renowned writing practitioners. For convenience, I have tried to categorize their insightful quotations. However, creative writing and expository writing are both highly unified activities. Their fundamental features are so intimately interwoven that any attempt to separate them must necessarily fail. Nevertheless, pretending to disjoin them helps organize our thoughts. So with no apologies for any “mis-categorized” quotes, here is what these respected writers had to say. 1. The Essence of Good Writing Inventor Thomas Edison once said: “Genius is 1 per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration”. In other words, it’s hard work. The same is true of writing, both creative and expository. This is good news, because it means that even the least inspired of us can write well if we are just willing to expend the necessary energy. Here are a few more quotations along the same line. “A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” - -Thomas Mann “The secret of good writing is to say an old thing in a new way or to say a new thing in an old way.” - - Richard Harding Davis “Good writing is clear thinking made visible.” - - Bill Wheeler “Writers must constantly ask: what I am trying to say? Surprisingly often, they don’t know.” - - William Zinsser “There are two kinds of writers in the world: bad writers and improving writers.” - - William Blundell “Every writer I know has trouble writing.” - - Joseph Heller “Good writing is hard work” - - Snoopy (Charles Schulz) 2. Writing as Discovery “I know very dimly when I start what’s going to happen. I just have a very general idea, and then the thing develops as I write.” - - Aldous Huxley “There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes.” - - William Makepeace Thackeray “The act of writing is the act of discovering what you believe.” - - David Hare “Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn’t wait to get to work in the morning. I wanted to know what I was going to say.” - - Sharon O’Brien “I never know what I think about something until I read what I’ve written on it.” - - William Faulkner In other words, if you believe you have nothing to say, pick a topic and start writing. You may surprise yourself. 3. The Objectives of Good Writing “We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out - - Ray Bradbury “I write because I’m afraid to say some things out loud” - - Anonymous. “The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think.” - - Edwin Schlossberg “When I sit down at my writing desk, time seems to vanish. I think it’s a wonderful way to spend one’s life” - - Erica Jong 4. The Techniques of Good Writing “The faster I write, the better my output. If I’m going slow, I’m in trouble. It means I’m pushing the words instead of being pulled by them.” - - Raymond Chandler “Work extra hard on the beginning of your story, so it snares reader’s instantly. And know how you’re going to end your story before you start writing. Without a sense of direction, you can get lost in the middle.” - - Joan Lowery Nixon “Detail makes the difference between boring and terrific writing. It’s the difference between a pencil sketch and a lush oil painting. As a writer, words are your paint. Use all the colors.” - - Rhys Alexander “What I like in a good author is not what he says, but what he whispers”. - - Logan Pearsall Smith. “Cut out all those exclamation marks. An exclamation mark is like laughing at your own jokes.” - - F. Scott Fitzgerald “Nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood - - Jr. Teague 5. Writing & Rewriting “I’m not a very good writer, but I’m an excellent rewriter.” - - James Michener “Having imagination, it takes you an hour to write a paragraph that, if you were unimaginative, would take you only a minute. Or you might not write the paragraph at all.” - - Franklin P. Adams “Write your first draft with your heart. Re-write with your head.” - - Anonymous “The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really want to say.” - - Mark Twain “I have made this [letter] longer, because I have not had the time to make it shorter” - - Blaise Pascal “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” - - Mark Twain In other words, the first draft is almost always too long and poorly structured. To be clear and concise requires at least a second draft, and often more. Or put more succinctly: “The first draft of anything is sh*t.” - - Ernest Hemingway 6. Clarity & Conciseness “When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing.” - - Enrique Jardiel Poncela “Easy reading is damn hard writing.” - - Nathaniel Hawthorne “What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure.” - - Samuel Johnson “Resist the temptation to try to use dazzling style to conceal weakness of substance.” - - Stanley Schmidt “Don’t write merely to be understood. Write so that you cannot possibly be misunderstood.” - - Robert Louis Stevenson “The writer does the greatest good who gives his reader the most knowledge and takes from him the least time.” - - Sydney Smith 7. Style & Words “‘I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions.’ - - James Michener “A good style should show no signs of effort. What is written should seem a happy accident.” - - W. Somerset Maugham “You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke. - - Arthur Polotnik “Writers must rely more on the feel of a sentence than on the dictates of a rule book.” - - James J. Kilpatrick “Like stones, words are laborious and unforgiving, and the fitting of them together, like the fitting of stones, demands great patience and strength of purpose and particular skill.” - - Edmund Morrison “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” - - Mark Twain 8. Egoism Unbound Few writers ever have the opportunity to quote themselves. I don’t know if anything I have ever said will be remembered a hundred years from now, or even a hundred minutes from now. But for what they are worth, here are few ideas I have encountered, developed, and believed in for over 40 years. “Convoluted writing is easy, it takes little thought. Simple writing is difficult; it takes all the thinking you can muster - and then some.” “Simple writing is a challenge whose rewards are boundless. Once a writer recognizes this, everything else falls into place.” “Good writing - and by extension good speaking - depend on only a handful of fundamental principles. Once you have mastered these, all the tips and techniques for applying them become almost self-evident.” “Clarity can be defined as a quasi-mathematical formula, which is also a recipe for effectively applying it. To be clear, you must do three things: 1. Emphasise what is of key importance. 2. De-emphasise what is of secondary importance. 3. Eliminate what is of no importance. In short: CL = EDE” “Conciseness can be defined as a quasi-mathematical formula, which is also a recipe for effectively applying it. To be concise, your text must be as: 1. Long as necessary, i.e. adequately cover all essential material 2. Short as possible, i.e. avoid all superfluous words, sentences and paragraphs In short: CO = LS” “Clarity and conciseness are two sides of the same coin. To be clear, you must be concise. Unnecessary verbiage obscures, so it must be eliminated. Likewise, to be concise, you must be clear. Only by knowing precisely what you want to say can you eliminate obscuring words, sentences and paragraphs.” “Writing is like cooking. You assemble the ingredients and start mixing. When the lifeless liquid begins to stiffen and take shape, you know you are making a cake. For me, the feeling is really that physical.” “Continually ask yourself: ‘Why the hell should anyone want to read what I am writing?’ If you can give at least three good reasons, stop writing and start thinking. Otherwise, you will be wasting everyone’s time - principally your own.” “Aim for the lowest common denominator. Virtually no one will object that your text is too easy, but some may object that it is too hard. Focus on those who may not understand; they are your true audience. The others will not object.” “The basic principles of good writing and speaking are few and easy to understand. Unfortunately, most books on the subject bury them under an avalanche of tips and techniques.” Having just written a book myself, let me conclude with something I wish I had said, but in fact comes from someone else. “Inside every fat book there is a thin book struggling to get out” - - Anonymous Amen.
