WHEN A PUBLISHER ASKS FOR PHOTOS by Pamela White While requirements from various publishers will vary by their reproduction process and their mechanical setups, you will find three essential formats that you must understand to provide photographs to illustrate your stories. Two of the requests will involve digital photography. As recently as 2000, the preponderance of photo illustrations were still taken by film cameras. With the boom in both digital photography and digital processing, that tide has turned. Most digital photography requirements will focus on one major element: image resolution. For top-quality reproduction, final image resolution must be maintained at between 200 and 300 dots per inch, or dpi. Most newspapers and many magazines will use 200 dpi pictures; some of the glossier magazines that have high reproduction standards will call for 300 dots per inch. Anything less will not be acceptable. To achieve these resolution standards, you will need a camera of at least 3.1 megapixels capability. Most good quality and above digital cameras on the market today will provide this resolution. But it is important to remember that high resolution has to start with the original shot and carry through all processing

The baby is asleep. The toddler is off to a play-date. Now you can grab a coffee and catch your breath. Yes. You’re a stay-at-home-mom. You wouldn’t have it any other way. No strangers are going to spend more time with your children than you, for pity’s sake. You and your husband gave this decision more debate than other lifestyle choice. But there are times when you question yourselves. Funny how those moments of frustration only appear when the bills are due, huh? The stomach flip-flops. The heart palpitates. “Will we manage?” you wonder out loud. These are the times when it hurts to think about the income you gave up when you decided to be a stay-at-home-mom. Now when you can grab a moment of time to get online…the search begins. You are on a mission to find a way to earn money from home. A home based business would be the answer to your prayers. Talk about information overload! You try googling “home based business” and almost spit your coffee over the monitor. By the time you sort through the outrageous claims like “How to earn 1 million dollars in 1 month by using our secret science-fiction system while sleepwalking!”, you’re at the end of that proverbial rope. And, it’s fraying fast. Take heart. There are ways to make money from home. You just have to look beyond the scams. Will it happen overnight? Nope. Can it be done in your sleep? I wish! Will there be “work” involved? Yup. To make money with your home based business, you will either provide a product or service to the consumer. Being a stay-at-home-mom makes the “service” part lose appeal. Unless the service can be provided from your own home at the hours that suit you. For example… businesses that outsource contract work to save themselves money. Another popular means to make money at home is to become a virtual assistant. This occupation is growing like wildfire. Start your search with places like .virtualassistantnetworking.com/ to get an idea of what it involves. No search would be complete without learning about .elance.com/ Hmmm, after looking at these sites, are you seeing how you can put your skills from your previous employment to work at a home based business? Things are starting to look up, right? Then there’s the “product” business. Which is simply, any product you create and sell. It can be locally or online. From gift baskets to candles. You can take a hobby and turn it into a money maker. There’s a woman in my area who shops at vintage and previously-worn clothing outlets and sells her treasures on eBay. She now makes more in a year than her previous job. Something to think about. One place you must visit is .entrepreneur.com/ What a learning experience! And check out their startup guides. They have answers to everything a future entrepreneur wants to know. Top rate. Last, is information. Yes, information sells like hot cakes. In the form of eBooks, audio files or videos. There’s a huge market of hungry consumers out there who will pay you for your information. The fact that you are a stay-at-home-mom gives you enough knowledge to write your own eBooks. Subjects from dealing with colic to finding the time and energy for romance. You don’t need to be a “professional writer”. If you can carry on a conversation, you can write and publish your own eBooks. It’s also a low-cost, low-risk home based business. Now you have homework to do. I’m sure you’ll find a way to make money from home while taking care of your children. And, plan the vacation of a lifetime. Before they’re too ashamed to be seen with you! Everyone in the SEO industry is singing the praises of articles and using articles to build traffic to their website. However there are in fact two tactics you can use in creating articles to get you qualified traffic. One of the biggest issues that we have as website developers is the threat of duplicate webpages and being penalized for duplicate web content. Essentially the problem with articles is that articles do in fact violate the search engine rules for duplicate data and the process of simply writing one article and submitting it to a few thousand article directories really does run the gauntlet with the search engines. Whilst to this point the search engines do not appear to have adjusted their algorithms regarding articles, I am sure that will happen in the future. So you need to have a very clear strategy on how you are using articles in your traffic building strategies. Lets face it, you like me do not want to read the same material over and over again on the internet so when I am working with my clients we actually develop really careful strategies on how we are going to use articles and what the articles use is going to be. When we write articles at our centre we do it for two reasons

Writing an editorial article may be one of the most satisfying forms of writing, especially for journalists trained to be objective at all costs. An editorial article can be about anything and from any standpoint. As long as you have an opinion and can support it with facts, you have the makings of an interesting piece. We all have opinions, right? Yet not all of us are editorial writers and not all editorials are worth reading. What exactly makes an editorial article good — and how do you write one? KNOW YOUR THESIS Too many people begin writing their topic with only a vague sense of opinion, never honing, or refining, that opinion into something sharp and distinctive. Be sure to have a solid grasp of what you’re arguing and why you’re arguing. Think about your topic and why you’ve chosen it first. What elements of the argument call to you? What angers or pleases you about this issue? Keep these things in mind as you begin to write. MINE THE DATA An editorial is only as good as its facts. Sure, you may think the death penalty is wrong and worthy of outlaw, but without backing it up with data, you have nothing but a half-formed opinion. Get the backstory, understand your argument inside-out. Research every aspect of your topic and cite as many facts as possible; generalities are the death of interesting editorials. CONSIDER THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED Don’t pigeonhole yourself into writing from majority’s opinion just because you can make easy arguments. Think long and hard about your position on the chosen issue and write from the standpoint that makes the most sense to you. Never, ever, ever compromise your beliefs for the sake of a byline. AVOID HYPERBOLE Sure, exaggerating slightly is expected during a heated face-to-face, but hyperbole has no place in a well-written editorial. You can rarely back up statements such as “always” and “never” with factual data, so stay away from them unless the hyperbole has a definite, and obvious, literary purpose. Typically, including these words will make your editorial prone to justifiable, and often fatal, criticism. UNDERSTAND THE OPPOSITION The only way to create a fully formed editorial with tons of depth and poignancy is to understand what the other side is arguing. Research opposing viewpoints with the same voracious energy as the ones with which you line up. Take the time to understand what the other side is arguing and why; after all, you can only combat a particular argument if you know exactly what that argument is. A book proposal is your calling card to literary agents and publishers. Despite a few exceptions, such as novels or memoirs, most authors write a proposal to sell a book and get an advance payment for it before drafting a manuscript. Here are five good reasons why you, an aspiring author, need to draft a book proposal: 1. To persuade an editor and publisher to acquire your project. If they don’t see your ideas spelled out on the page, they won’t be as willing to take a risk. The proposal gives them an opportunity to point out flaws in your material and make changes. 2. So you know what to do when you’re writing your book. A proposal serves as the blueprint for the book you plan to write
Every year ordering custom essays becomes more popular among students. Many potential clients consider using custom writing services because it saves their time, helps them to concentrate on their favorite subjects and offers more opportunities for personal development allowing active involvement in interesting activities besides studies. One of our writers decided to conduct research on different approaches to essay writing. He recorded the story of his friend who shared with him his experience of writing an essay for his English Literature class: …During my sophomore year at high school I was assigned to write an argumentative essay on any topic. I showed the first draft of the essay to my teacher. He read it carefully and then said, “This essay is not what I want.” I felt disappointed and angry at the same time. What’s wrong with my essay? Why didn’t he explain? I came home and decided to read it again. The first thing that I noticed was the introduction that didn’t catch attention of the readers. My essay was about gender inequalities and employment. I started with describing historical events related to gender issues and illustrating some facts which did not explain the topic of my essay. Therefore, I revised the introductory paragraph of the essay providing striking statistics about progression of gender inequalities for certain job positions. The introduction became interesting to read because the facts in the introductory part of my essay were taken from sources which were difficult to access and not actively “advertised”. Because of the uniqueness of the introduction readers were easily involved into the process of reading the essay; their desire was driven by their curiosity in further development of my arguments. However, my introduction was still not perfect. The next element that I had to revise was my thesis statement. Thesis helps a reader to focus on the main point that a writer is going to prove by his/her essay. It may seem easy because before writing an essay you record your central idea immediately and then collect information and build your writing process in accordance with the main idea. Nevertheless, the thesis statement that you have in your mind may not be persuasive in written form. It is essential to remember that your thesis statement is not a summary of the essay that you were assigned to write. On the contrary, it is your standpoint on the chosen topic. Thus, it should include your own opinion, the opposite point of view and the summary of supportive facts which will be presented further in the essay. The question is how to fit all those elements into one sentence of your thesis statement. It may take quite a long time. However, if you manage to write strong thesis statement you’ll succeed in presenting the complex idea of your essay using simple text. It does not mean using simple vocabulary; it rather means developing more persuasive arguments and making your essay easier to read. The thesis statement in my essay was: “According to sociological research, in multinational companies women have fewer opportunities than men to be hired for managerial positions.” I thought it was a perfect thesis statement; however, it was absolutely unacceptable. To begin with, the thesis statement of my essay was biased because it did not reflect the point of view of the opposite party. Besides, the main points which support the idea of the essay were not summarized in the thesis statement. Thus, I revised the thesis sentence and wrote the following: “Even though some researchers believe that the new perception of the role of women in modern society established equal opportunities for men and women, psychological indicators and sociological findings demonstrate that women have fewer opportunities to be hired for managerial positions in multinational companies.” At last I finished my work on the thesis statement! The writing process went smoothly. I already had the structure of the essay in my head. First, I recorded the first sentences which explained the central idea of each paragraph in the main body of the essay. Later I reorganized my notes which I took while reading useful literature on my topic and supplied each paragraph with the evidence that supported my arguments. In the conclusion, I summarized the key points and restated the thesis. I showed the second draft to my teacher and his only comment was, “I’m glad that you learnt how to write an essay.”… Probably this story will remind you your personal experience of learning how to write essays. The story is interesting because this student discovered himself those mistakes that he made while writing the first draft of his essay. His knowledge came from practice. He was able to write a good essay but he would spend less time on his improvement if he did research and used online guides on writing essays. Blogs from being simple online journals to business tools have touched many sectors in the online community. Now, with them helping online marketers reach new levels, another form of blogging has surfaced - video blogging. An Intro to Vlogging It was in 2005, when the Yahoo! Video Blogging community has surged dramatically in number that commenced the popularity of video blogging. What was theoretically known as what have influenced the trend in video blogging is the increase in number of the products that facilitate this new form of blogging - the iPods. Apple Computer produced these iPods as portable media players, which can play both audio and video files. A video blog also known as a “vlog” contains video clips. Usually, video bloggers or vloggers update their vlogs with video content in a reverse chronological arrangement. The usual setup of a video blog include a link to a video, images, and some supporting texts and other data. Why Vlog? Vloggers have various reasons on what prompt them to engage into video blogging. It may be a form of self-expression and to harness one’s creativity; it may be a way to utilize to promote one’s services or products; it could be a way to document certain procedures or events; it could also be one’s method of communicating education or a means to get in touch with family, relatives, friends clients and business partners. One concrete practical use of vlogging to propagate one’s business is that of a real estate agent. To update potential clients in terms of the condition of the real estate’s development, a video blog entry that showcases the property will be of just great help. No face-to-face meeting is required; time, energy and gas saved, right? Equipment to Get You Started with Vlogging Here are the types of equipment required to come up with a video blog: - A computer with a broadband Internet connection or at least a high-speed dialup connection will facilitate the uploading and downloading of the video clips. A computer with minimum of 1.0 GHz processor, 512 RAM memory, and an approximate of 40 gigs of hard drive space will do it. - A video camera, a web cam, or a digicam with video shooting abilities or just about any multi-media device for capturing your videos, even a cellphone with that feature will do. - A software for editing your videos before posting it in your video blog through Internet connection is also required. Free video editing software abound. One can also search for websites that offer this service for free. With those devices and a little creativity, you’ll easily get the hang of the vlogging technology. Have fun! The above article was written by Sarah Miller on behalf of .babygiftstation.com, a Baby Keepsakes & New Baby Gift Baskets online store specializing in luxury baby gifts and other baby couture.
There are plenty of companies online that offer advice and tips on starting your own business, or getting into freelancing easily. Although many are legit, and may actually give you good ideas on starting off on your own, others are there only to make money out of your naïveté and inexperience. So how can you tell which ones are in the right and which ones are cons? Truth is, you can’t. Every newbie out there who wants to get into freelancing or into a home-based business will start off by surfing online. Odds are you’ll type out the major keywords for this business. Freelancing, home based ideas, starting a freelancing career; are all keyword phrases which will give you results, but not the right ones. First of all, the first few sites are likely to have won the Google honor by spamming, whereby the content is only key-word rich, but doesn’t actually tell you anything new, or it may not even make proper sense! The best thing to do in this case is to skip the first few pages of the search and settle on the solid websites that offer plenty of good advice and tips. How to tell if a website is solid: Good Grammar- No website worth its domain space will risk offending prospective customers with bad language, bad sentence construction or typos. Seeing these means the website is not cared for properly, and any e-books or tips to making it big are just big air floaters. Legitimate Facts: Someone who cares about what they’re selling will be certain to have a logical outlook and facts that can be verified on their website to pull in prospective clients. This person will also give you a good deal. Remember, that as a newbie, you don’t have to be spending money on advice, or big ideas that are way out of your league. You’re better off getting it from those who’ve already made their careers in it before. But if you do have to get paid advice to get started, be smart and get it from the right source. Don’t go for someone who offers you a million dollars in a week. Sounds interesting, but it ain’t worth the page it’s written on. Want to start a freelance business? FreelanceSprout.com has the resources you need to help you get started.
