A lot of people never find their niche, or place in life because they don’t even know what their name means, and how it applies (sometimes now a ‘figure of speech’) to 21st Century life. God gives us all our names, and they indicate where our potential lies to fully express ourselves, to become something we love to do, or even survive sometimes! The first name on the birth certificate is the main, operative definition…..the middle name only is in support of the first name. —–>Go to the library reference desk and ask the librarian for their books on the definitions of first names; sit down for a few hours, and do a name study for your life’s sake! Then you can pick out those little opportunities that come along in life, tailor-made just for you, instead of being in a daze at all the stuff coming at you and stumbling to make the right decision, sometimes [or all the time] missing out! Writing articles every day to publish online is an essential marketing strategy if you want to get yourself known and make money. It’s also very difficult getting started but you just have to jump in. You sell yourself through the content of your article which must be useful, interesting and informative. When you do it well and consistently, you gain credibility and people would be interested to look at your product. This means you have to write a few hundred articles for maximum exposure, especially if you’re only depending on article writing. If that’s the case, you must send your articles to the best article directories, all of which are free of charge. Write one article a day, every single day. After you’ve gotten the hang of it (about a month) make it two a day, etc. because you’d have learnt about your new product by then. Article Content To get started, write about what you know or have learnt about your product. Don’t use the verbatim draft article or press release companies often provide. It is only an example, after all. Plus, if you use them as they are, they tend to sound stiff and uninteresting and nobody’s going to read it. And in any case, somebody will already have used the text and that will get your article rejected by article directories. Yep, it’s all been said before. Find a new angle; put your own spin on the content. If you’re new to the product and market, check the speciality review sites for information and ratings. Read other articles for ideas and draft your own based on what you understood. I didn’t say copy or rewrite what you read. That’s plagiarism! Article Title and Keywords On a scale of one hundred, your article title should be between seventy to eighty characters long, no more. This is for the search engines to take an interest in you. Always put your keywords in the first four (4) words of your title and try to repeat them at the end, athough sometimes that’s not possible. A good example is my title; my keyword is article writing but I couldn’t fit it in exactly the same way and have it make sense, so I turned it around. It still works. I got this tip from J. Herring, the article marketing guy. Search engines ‘lose interest’ if they don’t find any keywords in the first four to five words of your title; that’s why long titles matter. But please remember that your titles should always make sense. Article directories will reject your article for this. Use of Keywords in Article Body and Article Length Repeat your keywords in the first line of your first paragraph and write between four hundred to five hundred words per article. You don’t need more. The ratio of keywords to article content is one keyword for every hundred words. Article Submission After you’ve written your article, proof-read it, do it again in preview mode, and one last time after you publish it (you can usually edit after publishing in most free article directories but not at EzineArticles). Send your articles to the best article directories: EzineArticles (top notch in all areas); Buzzle (tons of how-to write information and they accept fiction and poems); GoArticles (easy, good exposure & great for 1st timers); Amazines (distribute to other ezines); iSnare (pay for articles but no promotional content). Get exposure. Be sure to read the submission guidelines and stick to them. If you don’t already have one, open a Twitter account and upload your articles there as well and think about joining other social groups where you can promote your articles (not Digg and Propeller
News writing can appear to be a restrictive discipline in that you are limited to writing what other people do or say. However, within this scope there are plenty of ways in which you can tell your story. When learning how to write like a journalist, a good reporter could take a simple piece of information and spin into different angles, depending o the kind of publication he or she is working for. For instance, take the following made-up quote from a make believe world-famous architect who is commenting on a city’s council building that is undergoing reconstruction. “I think it needs a lot of work. It looks amateur in a few places but if your architects put their minds to it, they can make it into a world-class facility.” One publication could take a negative view of the comments by writing: “World famous architect John Smith criticized the city’s council building, saying it looks like the work of amateurs”. Another news outlet may look on the bright side: “The city’s new council building could become a world-class structure if planners put their minds to it, according to leading architect John Smith.” The ethics of how to angle a news story could be debated forever, but the fact is that there are may ways to skin a cat when it comes to news writing. And the function of this article is to provide budding journalists with ideas on how they could align stories to various situations. Positive or negative
If you are like most people, you determine which articles to read or download by looking at the title. Your title is the only advertising that your article will get. For that reason, the title is the most important part of your article. You can write the world’s best article; but if it gets few, or no readers, it was time wasted. Following are 5 tactics to explode your readership and generate massive page views: 1. Never hurry through the title. Spend some time and create something compelling and interesting. Put yourself in the readers place and imagine what words would get your interest. If you find it interesting, others probably will too. 2. Use descriptive words and action verbs. Instead of saying ‘Cleaning Tips’ try to spice it up a bit. Try using, ‘Cleaning Tips to Make Your House Smell Like Springtime.’ A descriptive title like this will attract many times the readers. 3. Attract the search engines. Your title should contain your most relevant keywords. If possible, place your most important keywords near the beginning. Using the example above, ‘Cleaning Tips to Make Your House Smell Like Springtime,’ the words ‘Cleaning Tips’ are our keywords. In order to attract the search engines, we have begun our title with that term. This technique is most effective. 4. Create a list of titles. Don’t just pick one title and slap it up there. Develop a list of 5 to 10 titles and determine which is best from your list. 5. Write your article first. Many writers start with a title, and then write the article. This is a mistake. Do not attempt to come up with a title until you have completed your article. It will save you lots of time and re-writing if you do it this way. A highly effective article title will generate much more interest for your articles. And articles that grab one’s interest generate more readers, clicks, subscribers, and profits than articles with boring titles. So practice the 5 tactics above, explode your readership, and generate massive page views. Turn Your Articles Into Big Money Makers! Make Money With Your Articles Are You Making Money? FREE Ebook
Ted Nicholas, one of the fathers of copywriting, sold more than US$4.5 million through writing salesletters. Internet Marketers make a killing through the carefully-written emails they send out while promoting their products and/or services to the list of subscribers. The teaser is that internet marketing is a billion dollar industry. What’s far more interesting to note is that most profits resulted from marketing in the written form. A good example is Ewen Chia, the leading authority in affiliate marketing who attributes most of his success through building his reputation with the use of article marketing. In one of the conference, he demonstrated his money making power by making close to a million with just one email in less than 24 hours. Could you imagine that? I started off with the different examples not to impress you, but to impress upon you that if they can make their fortune through the power of words, you can too - provided you master the use of words to the same level as they did. Back to the title, there’s some matters I have to clarify. Writing can make you rich, but it takes time. It probably took years for those seasoned internet marketers like Ewen to master article writing skills and it’ll possibly cost you the same time. The bad news is that’s not all… It also takes determination and patience - determination to complete writing your articles and the patience to last long enough to enjoy the fruits of your success. On the other hand, the good news is that all these are achievable, as long as you set your heart to article marketing and channel all your efforts in it. Trust that it will bring you the same excellent results as it did for internet marketing millionaires. I could have stopped here but I wanted to leave you with some solid advice. So read on… To accelerate your article marketing results, here are some tips you’ve probably never come across: 1. Take constructive criticisms well. There will probably be times when your readers disagree with what you’ve written. Well, it’s normal. Not everyone will agree with what you have to say. Treat those constructive criticisms as feedback to improve your article even further. 2. Include a photo of yourself in your article. Putting a face to the article gives it a touch of human-ness and uniqueness. It also gives your readers a glimpse of the author who wrote a fine piece of article. Like what you read? Listen. John Ballantyne A “Brand New” Maturity Some bands get popular as they get older, but their most diehard fans aren’t always happy. They claim the band has sold out to the corporate machine and aren’t writing songs about what they care about. The band “Brand New” has gotten older and more popular, however selling out is exactly what they have not done; “brand new” has simply matured as they have aged and been through more in their life. “Brand new” is a band that formed in 2000 and consisted of members all from Long Island. Lead singer Jesse Lacey, of Levittown has written most of the songs for the band. In 2001, Brand New was an immature, innocent pop-punk band that made songs in which they fantasized about supermodels. However, by 2006 Brand New has become a mature group of young men, writing songs that deal with more serious social issues, such as drunk driving. Through Jesse’s lyrics you can see how he, as well as the rest of the band has matured so much from their first album release in 2001, to their most recent album in 2006. Brand New’s first album was release in 2001 and titled, Your Favorite Weapon. This album was your typical pop-punk album filled with catchy lyrics about girls, partying and drinking, friends, and enemies. The song “Magazines” shows the childishness of Brand New at the time, in which Jesse continuously talks about how he is in love with a supermodel he only, sees on TV: “Laetitia, you destroy me, so I can’t see why I feel so lonely when you and I could be forever perfectly perfect together. I know. Broken down in my dead bedroom, stuttering to pictures of you. I know that you can always see me. I saw you staring through my TV last night.” The girl Laetitia he is talking about is supermodel Laetitia Casta who he falls in love with because he sees her on TV and in, as the song is titled, magazines. Laeticia “destroys” him because he is infatuated with her and realizes he will never be able to be with her. He becomes lonely at this thought and dreams that they can be “perfectly perfect together”. He is upset at the fact he will never be with Laeticia (“broken down in my dead bedroom”) and is speechless at how beautiful she is while staring obsessed at pictures of her (“stuttering to pictures of you”). He also dreams that while he is watching her on television and magazines that she can also see him when he says, “I know that you can always see me, I saw you staring through my T.V. last night”. Jesse Lacey feel as if her and the girl connect when he sees her image, whether in magazines or on T.V. This infatuation he has with a supermodel he has never met, as well as pleasuring himself to images of this girl, gives Your Favorite Weapon the immature pop-punk edge that they were labeled with in 2001. Still nervous and fantasizing about the supermodel he so desperately desires, he goes on to say, “Laetitia, you got my hand shaking, I’m begging you oh baby please stop breaking my heart because I got the feeling that you and I will never really get it on.” Jesse’s hand is not shaking because he is having a seizure or nervous, but because he knows that him and Laetitia will never “get it on” and therefore will pleasure himself while looking at images of her with his “hand shaking”. It is immature to have obsession with a super model especially when they seem to contain some sort of emotional attachment. The song “Magazines” is just one of many songs on this album that shows that Brand New was just a bunch of kids making music that weren’t really deep, but they enjoyed playing. Considering the members of Brand New were in their late teens and early twenties when they created Your Favorite Weapon, their music was childish. However, by 2006 Brand New had grown into adults and released their most recent album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. It is rumored that the whole album is about the tragic death of Katie Flynn, the flower girl in a wedding. After the reception, Flynn was being driven to a hotel. Their limousine was struck by a drunk driver heading in the wrong direction on the Meadowbrook parkway, and the seven year old Katie, was killed. While it is unknown whether they knew Flynn personally, the story was a tragic and popular story in their hometown on Long Island. While it is disputed as to whether the whole album is about this tragedy, the song cleverly titled, “Limousine” is undoubtedly about the accident: “K, here’s your ride. Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you are God, and grow, And that it’s your own day to wed We’ve found your man. He’s drinking up. He’s all-American, and he’ll drive. He’s volunteered with grace to end your life.” This lyric from the song refers to the limousine they take to the wedding (“K, here’s your ride) and introduces Katie, who was the flower girl in the wedding (“Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle”). Then goes on to introduce the killer (“We’ve found your man”) and explain that he is drunk and has made the choice to drink and drive and thus the choice to end Katie’s life (“He’s drinking up…..and he’ll drive. He’s volunteered with grace to end your life”). Toward the end of the song he counts how many times he repeats the last line and ends Brand New throughout the album, but especially this song take a very serious approach to drunk driving and prove through their lyrics how devastating it is. Showing “Magazines” from Brand New’s first album, “Your Favorite Weapon”, and “Limousine” from their most recent album, “The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me” prove how much Brand New has certainly matured as a band. These two tracks prove that Brand New has absolutely matured as a band over the past five years. The band started young, writing about falling in love with images of a supermodel and pleasuring oneself to them. Upon reaching adulthood, the band matured and their music followed suit. They took on much more serious topics, such as how big of a problem drunk driving is, as well as citing a tragedy from their hometown as an example of the problem. Brand New has grown as a band rapidly over the past five years and will continue to mature even more with each album because they will become wiser and more aware of society over time. In several songs that the band has made, they take a very strong stance against drunk driving and I expect them to become stronger advocates against drinking and driving in the future. While the type of music they play may change slightly, the substance and meaning will still exist. Bibliogrphy Brand New, and Jesse Lacey. “Magazines.” Your Favorite Weapon. Razor & Tie, 2001. It seems that more and more people are being forced to cover up their body art. I honestly can’t believe it has gone this far. It seems with the growing popularity of tattoos and society some what “excepting” them, oddly enough more and more jobs are requiring their employees to cover up their body art. Which if you ask me is completely unfair. I feel that making someone cover up their tattoo is discrimination against people who have ink. I mean we are taught not to judge someone by the color of their skin, so why doesn’t this apply to someone who has a little ink on their skin? Sadly, I guess these “officials” do not feel the same way about this. They are more concerned about what people may think. USA Today is reporting that cities and school districts around the country are forcing their employees to cover up their tattoos and if they don’t it could cost them their job. The powers that be say that this new ridiculous rule has been issued to help maintain a good image. This new rule is effecting teachers, janitors and firefighters. Capt. Armando Hogan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, explained the reason behind all the firefighters having to follow this rule. “We didn’t want to offend some people in the community.” If you ask me its all a bunch of bull. What about the men and women who risk their life to save someone from a fire or accident, have you they even thought about how this rule would offend them? Just goes to show that these officials are only looking at these issues from one side. Your Tattoo Friend Ashley
Who is Sid Kali? I’ve written, directed, and produced two full-length urban features, CONSIGNMENT and IN WITH THIEVES, plus have a third feature in production titled STASH SPOT. Some people feel that when you attach the word urban to an independent film the story will be based on slices of life that unfold in housing projects or the barrio. Which do provide rich and colorful backdrops that reflect a slice of americana. On the flip side urban culture has moved beyond the housing projects and barrios. Taking those attitudes and feelings into new environments. This opens up new backdrops for you to shoot urban films. You no longer are forced to only shoot in the inner city to produce urban films. A few other hits urban movies take is that the production quality will be less than an art house film made on a similar budget. That urban movies don’t have well written scripts and they all look the same style wise. Many innovated filmmakers that love the urban genre are changing the way people think about that. They are putting out high quality urban movies made on indie budgets that are freshly entertaining. The diversity of the urban genre continues to grow because the storylines are connecting with a larger audience by going beyond what you would expect to see in an urban movie. The elements you can fold into an urban drama are becoming more complex earning these films more respect. Through networking I’ve connected with Irish-American filmmaker Mike O’Dea founder of Shamrock Films. He is currently in production with TOWNIES. A film about the Charlestown mob. To me it looks like a great urban movie being delivered from the viewpoint of Irish-American gangster characters. The word ‘crime drama’ is used to describe films like ‘Training Day’, ‘The Departed’ and ‘Scarface’, but to many urban movie buffs these aren’t crime dramas. They are urban masterpieces done by highly talented and respected filmmakers at the top of their creative game. Shooting urban movies has always been a goal of mine. When I began fleshing out the script for CONSIGNMENT my first feature film I wanted it to be authentic across the board. Nothing kills the vibe of an urban movie more than it being completely phony. Like in the older Westerns when the Native-Americans were played by blonde hair blue eyed actors. Imagine how different ‘Dances With Wolves’ would have played to viewers. There are tremendous actors out there at every level that can deliver powerful performances. On a larger budget feature actors are able to get into character, research the role, or work with a dialect coach if needed. On a truly independent film budget you will be lucky to get in a decent amount of rehearsals before shooting. It is sometimes a benefit to work with real people for what I see as tailored roles. In CONSIGNMENT we had a character named Smiles that was from the streets and had survived a nearly fatal shooting. My friend Ruben Navarro was cast. Unfortunately, he did survive a near fatal shooting in his life. It made sense to me as a director to work with him as a first time actor since he understood the character from personal experience. It wasn’t like he was being cast as for a role he had zero knowledge of. As the writer I felt that this particular script was best served highlighting a Black and Latino perspective playing out through the film. The plot centers around a Virginia Beach drug dealer that runs into trouble and has to lay low in Southern California. This being the movies all the problems that come with power, drug money, fast women, and jealous rivals has to come out. It was nice to be able to mix in the subtle cultural differences between the two places. This came from being able to work with Co-Producer/Editor Tim Beachum that had lived in Ohio, Detroit , and Virginia Beach. I’ve only lived in Southern California. When the film was done shooting we were able to mix in some outlaw bikers and corrupt police. The personal bonus was being able to add people I grew up with to the cast to give it a real edge. I felt comfortable adding elements from the East Coast because I could consult Tim Beachum. If that option had no been there I would have focused on writing what I knew. That would have been a film that was completely slanted to the West Coast lifestyle. If you’re able to ever expand your film take advantage of that. If not and you have a limited budget write a film you can shoot within your resources using what you know. Through collaboration with the website Jackin4Beats.Com we were able to add a quality soundtrack featuring East Coast & West Coast artists including Custom Made Recordings, Ayreon The Don™, and Malice & Da Commission. You’re going to hear “NO” a lot when tracking down music for your soundtrack. A nice music budget makes it easier, but most independent films have very little money for music. Don’t give up or settle on music that doesn’t fit your film. There are music artists that will appreciate the exposure of being on a movie soundtrack. CONSIGNMENT lent itself to a hip hop soundtrack, so we focused on rising hip hop artists. In our case it happened to work. CONSIGNMENT has recently been acquired by Maverick Entertainment Group, Inc. It will be a direct to video title. A release date is pending. Please Google Consignment by Sid Kali to find our website and get an update when and where you can add this DVD to your urban collection. After the experience of CONSIGNMENT. We decided expand our take on the urban genre with our second feature film IN WITH THIEVES. This urban film blends together a Cuban cartel deep into their darker version of Santeria, blood diamonds being pushed by an African based crime group, ruthless Albanian gangsters, and an American burglary crew. This unique blend of creative and visual elements we felt would make for a provocative urban film. The inspiration was to show that urban stories can have global influences. The production of IN WITH THIEVES was difficult because casting was calling for extremely diverse and capable actors that could play real in front of the camera. Good fortune smiled on us bringing some tremendous talent that we had not worked with before and some faces from CONSIGNMENT we respected. The goal was to fold in the Albanian Mob, American crooks from the streets, an African based crime syndicate and a Cuban cartel that practiced a wild version of Santeria. I asked a family friend that ran a botanica to show me items that would be authentic. She set me up down to Jesus Malverde giving us realism at the voodoo altar scenes. Sharing real experiences and honest practical advice with others interested in shooting urban movies is what this article will hopefully do. The biggest lesson I learned was that if you have a certain amount of time and money to produce your film do not overwrite your script and over schedule each shooting day to fit your over all schedule. I’m not a film professor so the easy way for me to put it is like this. If you’re 1st Ad or UPM breakdown the script and say it will take 14 days to shoot your film, don’t expect to shoot in a 7 days and get everything you want. Think about trimming the script if you can’t extend the shooting days. On IN WITH THIEVES this became a reality for me as a director as the shooting days I had available began to shorten quickly in comparison to what we were getting into the can. By the third day rock and roll UPM Cameron Penn already let me know at the pace we were shooting we wouldn’t nail all the pages we needed to finish the movie. I knew the script was ambitious and my own writing ego wasn’t open to deleted some scenes that really weren’t crucial to the film. Ego is a terrible thing, not just in film, but in life. At least for me anyway. Before the fourth day of shooting an actress who had a supporting role let us know she couldn’t show up for her first day of shooting because her agent got her an audition for a well known television pilot. I never begrudge anyone that has a chance for a shot at what they feel is a bigger opportunity than what they committed to. We wished her well and knew the production could not shoot around her or reschedule her. The practical choice was to release her from the film. It was a blessing in disguise. I had to do some re-writes to remove her character from the script. This allowed me not to fall in love with any scene or dialogue that wasn’t important to the film. It has been said that screenwriters should not fall in love with their own words. I agree! I was able to write her out and the story was tighter. We finished the movie. It’s currently in the final stages of post-production . We will begin shopping it to interested distributors shortly. If you are interested in seeing the trailer for this film please Google IN WITH THIEVES. With the love for urban movies still strong we’re starting production on our third feature STASH SPOT. Rival criminals fight to find a fortune in cash ripped-off during a drug deal gone bad. When the stick-up artists responsible turn up dead, a bloodbath erupts as each vicious criminal makes their ruthless play to locate the money. You always learn things with each film you produce. Hopefully filmmakers will continue to push the urban genre beyond what it is now. * Quick and dirty tips if you’re going to produce your own urban movie: (* does not apply to filmmakers that have Hollywood connections or access to big money) Do not write an amazing scene like the shoot-out in ‘Heat’ if you can’t pull it off. Write realistic locations into your script that you have shooting access to. Action scenes are always going to take longer to light and shoot than talking head scenes. Make sure your dialogue is authentic to the culture of the street. If you’re writing your own script your words cost nothing. I Wardrobe can’t make Corey Feldman (nothing against The Corey) a Latino gangster by putting him in a bandana and a flannel buttoned only at the top. I surprised they think that works, but they do in some really bad urban movies. Whatever happens keep the show rolling.
Book reviews can be a valuable tool for readers trying to evaluate whether a particular book is worth putting their time into. Book reviews are also a great way for authors to get the word out about their latest creation. Writing book reviews can also be a great exercise in critical thinking and writing for the reviewer. Plus everyone loves to share their opinion. If you know in advance that you will be reviewing a certain book. Put a little thought into what information may be important for reviewing the book. If it’s a fiction book you may want to familiarize your self with the setting, the characters, and the perspective of the writer. If it is non fiction you may be interested in what you currently know about the subject and what you would like to learn after reading the book. Also check out the preface or introduction, the about the author section, and the table of contents and book jacket cover. While you’re reading take particular note of the main concepts of the book. How is the book organized? What points is the author trying to convey? Are the concepts explained well? Are the main points of the book organized in a logical sequence? If it’s a fiction work; do the characters seem real to you? Are you absorbed in the storyline and the setting of the book? Is it interesting? Are there lessons to be learned? Is the background information of the story line informative? Is it an easy read, or do you have to force yourself to plod through it? One of the nice things about book reviews is that usually no two reviews are the same. The review reflects the reviewer’s unique perspective. The views and background knowledge of the reviewer are reflected in their opinions of the book. This is a good thing. Don’t be afraid to actually give your opinion of the book. Did you like it? Was reading this book a worthwhile way to spend your time? What was good? What was bad? Did you come away from the experience with new found knowledge, or a changed opinion? A good review is an honest opinion about what you think of the book. Once you’ve put some thought into the reviewer mind set, writing the review is the easy part. Look over your notes and the book. Establish some background information. What is the book about? Either summarize the key concepts or the key characters. Organize your summary in a way that leaves plenty of room for your actual evaluations of the book. Let the readers know what the author was trying to get across and if they actually succeeded. Once again explain a little bit about whether you liked the book and why or why not. Adapt your unique review to express the point of the book, and your interpretation of it. With some foresight and preparation it should be easy to review just about any piece of work. The easiest part of reviewing a book is actually the writing. So quit procrastinating and get started.
