You’ve written a nonfiction book and decided to try to sell the idea to a conventional publisher. Where do you begin? Whether you are going directly to the publisher or trying to interest an agent in representing you, you begin with a well-crafted query letter. A query letter is a one-page document that must entice the recipient to want to know more about your book. It is by definition concise, so every word must count. Its job, like that of a good resume, is to get you in the door. To do that it must be informative and inviting — both steak and sizzle. A query letter may be the first step in contacting a publisher or agent but it is the last step in writing your book proposal. In essence a query letter is a mini proposal, an encapsulation of your most salient points on a single piece of paper. It has four steps. 1. Your book hook The book hook is single sentence that grabs your reader’s attention. It not only explains what your book is about, it sums up the essence of the story. It pulls the reader in and elicits a response, which should be one of interest and curiosity. If you have written a powerful concept statement, you already have your book hook. Here are a few examples: The freedom and independence of a freelance writer’s life is only half the story; the other half includes the practical realities of finding work, writing well on demand, and managing a business — all at the same time. Dealing with difficult people in the workplace is a given; but it takes people skills and practice to build and sustain productive relationships with peers, supervisors, and others on or off the job. Ask any ten successful women these questions — What does success mean to you? How have you achieved it? What advice would you give other women? — and you will get ten completely different answers. In her early teens Jane Doe suffered a devastating depression that came on with no warning and signaled the beginning of a life-long battle with bipolar disorder, a condition that was not diagnosed until she reached adulthood. 2. More about the book This is your opportunity to answer the questions an agent or publisher might have after being captivated by your book hook. It is a synopsis with punch, your book boiled down to a short paragraph. What is the book’s purpose? What are its main points? Why does it important and timely? If your hook is your elevator speech, consider this paragraph what you might say if you and the other person traveled a few more floors together. 3. About the author What would an agent or publisher want to know about you as it pertains to your book? Are you an expert on this subject, and, if so, what makes you one? Here is your chance to explain your qualifications and writing credentials. If your education is relevant to the subject, include it; otherwise, leave it out. Have you been published and where? Have you won any awards? Has your work been reviewed? Keep this paragraph focused on your subject matter and writing experience. 4. Action step Your closing paragraph should be short and simple. Express your appreciation for the reader’s time and consideration of your submission. Include a complete book proposal or an outline and sample chapter and your contact information. Mention a date when you will follow up. A solid query letter is not something you dash off. It takes a great deal of thought and often many revisions. Certainly, it will be a smoother process if you have written your book proposal, but it is not only the content that counts; it is also packaging. The publisher or agent wants to know what your book is about, why you are qualified as the author, and how well you write. This letter may be the single most important piece of writing you will do. Volunteer health, words which means unpaid health…there is hospitality, care and concern with the people whom you don’t even know. Benevolent acts like this must be given honor, the helpers of health organizations are the people whom we should be proud of. What they are doing is really an expression of kindness. Through this kind of service, the volunteers are involved to different philanthropic health-related activities and services. The spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood is shown because through this activity the volunteers get connected with each other and work as a synchronize team with one mission and that is to help the poor people. Aside from this, volunteers can also have the chance to understand other cultures since not all volunteers belong to the same race. The experience, the time, the care, and the love the volunteers are giving in every health services will be paid back by the sweet smiles from the faces of the people whom they had helped. Volunteers of Women for World Health usually say this thing, “To aid many people is really a crucial task, but if you’re going to do it by mind and heart… there’s no such thing as critical.” From this, we can get the idea that helping people with love is not laborious compared to those people who joined as volunteers just for the fame. A good and responsible volunteer is determined through his heart. That is why in Women for World Health, the number of volunteers is increasing. These responsible volunteers are not after the fame that they will get. They became volunteers for this foundation because they want to support the foundation’s life-altering service and that is through volunteer health services. The free health services that Woman for World Health offers focuses on plastic surgery operations for children. They identify impoverished communities in different countries around the world who have children with difficult and primitive conditions such as cleft, cleft palate, hare lip, webbed hands or feet, burn scars, and tumors. Usually the volunteers of the said foundation are the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses in reconstructive surgical techniques. The spirit of volunteerism and goodwill in the foundation is a great thing for us to be proud of. People around the world should also do the same thing and follow the footsteps of these volunteers and if that will happen, a world full of love, a perfect world is reborn. Be a health volunteer!
As one of the hottest forms of viral marketing today, article writing and submission must be part of your marketing effort whether your business is online, brick-and-mortar, or both. To get the most out of your article marketing campaign, you must avoid these three fatal mistakes. Not writing articles for publication Not writing enough articles for publication Giving up too soon The first fatal mistake in article marketing is choosing not to write articles. Yes, I said, “choosing not to write articles,” because it is a choice. You can choose to continue to read about all the benefits of article marketing and not do anything to further your own campaign, or you can choose today, right now, to write your first article for publication and drive targeted traffic to your site. Whatever it takes to move you to action, you must do it today. If you choose not to write articles for publication, this powerful marketing strategy will be lost to you along with the hundreds or thousands of new visitors who could increase your sales daily. It’s as simple as this: You must choose to write articles for publication and submit them to the myriad free article directories on the web. There is no other way to market your business this powerfully and effectively for free. The second fatal mistake is not writing enough articles. While it is not necessary to write an article every day or even every other day, the more articles you write the more potential you have for exposure. One man I read said that he writes 100 articles a month; another man writes 30 a month. If writing just one article sounds overwhelming to you, start with one article with a plan to write another one next week, another the following week, and so on. Once you start writing, you will be surprised at the knowledge you have and find that you enjoy writing. If you write one article each and every week, you will have 52 articles spread throughout the world in a year. Keep in mind that writing just one article probably won’t increase your exposure enough that you will notice, but a number of articles written over time will bring a stream of traffic to your door. If you absolutely cannot write an article, take advantage of article writing companies that are available. These can be found by doing a quick search in one of the major search engines. These articles won’t be free, but they could still provide advertising through article marketing cheaper than advertising through other means. The third fatal mistake in article marketing is giving up too soon. As I wrote previously, writing just one article probably won’t increase your exposure enough for you to see much difference in traffic to your site immediately. However, repeated articles spread throughout the web by others who pick up your article have the potential of putting hundreds or thousands of dollars in your pocket. Your first article might not get much attention right away, but imagine that, as your writing skills and knowledge improve over time, subsequent articles receive attention and are picked up by more and more bloggers and ezine publishers. As your name becomes recognized, people who have enjoyed and learned from your articles will return to the internet and search for more articles that you have written. Even if your first article isn’t widely distributed at first, it could receive exposure months later when you are seen as an expert in your field. Think of some of today’s best-selling authors. Do you suppose that every one of them made it to the New York Times Bestsellers list with their first book? By all means, “no!” Most of these authors worked and toiled for years, writing book after book before making it on the list. If John Grisham spent three years writing his first book, which was rejected repeatedly by publishers before writing a bestseller, should you expect that your first article will create such a stir in the industry that your name will be in the headlines tomorrow? Probably not. But remember that, even though his first book was rejected repeatedly before being made into a measly 5000 copies, Grisham immediately started working on his second novel, one made into a movie and ranked #1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list during its 47 week tenure. After that he had two more hits, one of which debuted at the top spot on the New York Times list. And it gets better, and makes my point. After three books made John Grisham famous, do you know what happened? His first book, the one that was repeatedly rejected and had a small printing of only 5000 copies, was reprinted and this time it was a bestseller. What changed? Certainly not the plot or the characters. What changed was the reputation of the author and the desire of his audience to read books that he penned. This is exactly what could happen to you, too. But in order to get to that point, to the point where your work is sought after by people who want to hear what you have to say, you must avoid these three fatal mistakes in article marketing: choosing not to write articles for publication, not writing enough articles for publication, and giving up too soon. Start writing articles today and consistently submit your original work for publication. You’ll be glad you did. The Deep Web, or Silent Web as it’s sometimes called, is a hidden resource that every writer should know about. Whether you want information for an article, for an historical novel or even for a play or film script, the Deep Web may find it for you when Google can’t. There is considered to be between 350 and 500 million web pages that can be indexed by the likes of Google, MSN, Yahoo and others. The Deep Web is actually not included in these and is reckoned to be many times greater in size! The visible web is indexed by ‘spiders’, small robot programs that wander about from site to site gathering details on links and pages to send back to base from which the search engine’s index is compiled. But some web sites can’t be accessed by spiders. The spider can call at the door, index the address, but can’t get in to record the contents. The reasons for this are varied, and include the fact that website owners can deliberately ban spiders from entering their sites if they wish. Another is that if the site comprises of databases, these are anathema to spiders which can’t do anything with them. And it is sites like these, made up of databases full of fascinating information on an bewildering variety of subjects, that mainly comprise the Deep Web. There are thousands, maybe even millions, of such databases out there on the web, but you need to know where they are and what their address is in order to get into them. The quality of information on the Deep Web is reckoned to be very high compared to the rest of the web, partly because so many universities and other technical and scientific facilities contribute. Some databases, such as SJLibrary.org (a collaboration between San Jose State University and San Jose Public Libraries) restrict access to part or all of their content to their students and faculties, but there are plenty of others that do not. So, it’s time to dip your toes into this vast ocean and see what you can find. To start you off here are some sites to try: Direct Search is a good one (.freepint.com/gary/direct.htm) Intute
Miraculously, I was still alive when I woke up, having slept well. I lit my lamp to see what the monster was up to, and could see the beast slowly licking some tiger bones. It was carefully watching me out of the corner of its eye, and it was perplexed. Last night brought up things that were buried so deep in the creatures past existences that it could not remember ever having such feelings before, and it was somewhat confused. The monster’s past lives that Ariya revealed were truly hideous, including the one that sent it to hell. I knew that if I could just communicate the experiences to the creature, there might be a chance that it would remember its bad kamma and resolve to make amends. This recollection and remorse would be the only thing required for the hell being to escape its horrific fate and begin its journey back. The difficulty would be in somehow convincing the beast that I could, indeed, help. My lamp oil was running low so I extinguished the flame. We sat in silence. After a while I said, “I know why you were thrown into the hell realm.” “Really?” said the monster, sarcastically. “Really.” I answered, curtly. Do you want to hear about it or not?” “Not necessarily,” it said matter-of-factly, “but if it will keep your mind off being eaten, go ahead and tell me all about it.” “Once, a very long time ago,” I began, “you were living on a sphere of incredible beauty. The people were gentle and kind, with their lives centered on peaceful trade and commerce between the various countries, one of which was governed by you. During your rule, foreigners immigrated to your country who were exceptionally skilled traders, and because of their proficiency, they prospered more than the natural born citizens you represented. Knowing that they would eventually erode your political power with their increasing numbers and influence, you became resentful of them and their accomplishments, and they became a thorn in your side. Any news of their achievements only enraged you more; so much so, that eventually you made a decision to convince your supporters that these immigrants were dangerous and you began a crusade to exile them. “The people believed your persuasive arguments as you were very charismatic and clever. You even practiced hand motions and speech techniques to become a shrill voice against these innocent immigrants whose solitary sin was to be successful in what they were proficient at, which was blameless commerce. Your proclamations became increasingly strident, and your support increased as well, encouraging you to begin ruthless acts against these people, going as far as sending them far away from the main centers of your country and imprisoning them in compounds. Then, as the expense mounted to maintain these prisons, you began killing these poor people until every one of them was exterminated . . . with the exception of one young man who was overlooked. “This young immigrant, whose life was destroyed and his family murdered by your politics, hid in the countryside, and watched helplessly while his entire race was wiped out. When the carnage was over, he slipped into the city, and while you were dining and celebrating your victory over these unfortunate people, he came into the hall disguised as a server and buried a dagger in your heart.” I lit my lamp, risking the small amount of oil that remained. Now I could look directly in the monster’s eyes as I continued, “When you died, your kamma consisted of nothing but evil actions - killing and hatred - and you immediately were chased by the beings of hell until you finally relented and became one of them, and then you dove into this cave for refuge. And here you will remain until the gentle rains wear this mountain of solid granite down to the ground, or until you see a different way to live.” “Good!” The beast laughed. “I knew I was rotten, and I’m glad I killed those stupid people. And I would do it again if I could.” The creature then became quiet . . . for a long time. The influence of my inner work from the previous night affected it deeply, and it started to remember the horrifying things it had done. It was all extremely disquieting, even to a monster. I was definitely becoming a thorn in the beast’s side. Things were coming up in the hell being’s mind and heart which were dormant for eons in this cursed cave, and the creature was becoming increasingly confused. Kamma, however, is a stubborn thing, and since the monster’s cruelty could not be diffused that quickly, it decided there was no alternative but to eat me. The creature shuffled across the cave and grabbed me with its long claws, but since I was wearing my heavy coat, the beast only managed to grab a claw-full of fur, and as the coat was ripped off my body, a small, yellowed piece of paper fluttered to the floor. I had forgotten all about it until now, and then remembered that Sahmad had given it to me many years ago on the mountain. The monster glanced at it with a momentary curiosity, and then for some strange reason was compelled to pick it up. Astonishingly, he found that he could read the enigmatic writings on the water stained document! It was a letter written in the ancient text from the sphere and era of the beast’s last lifetime, and was addressed to the boy who had driven the dagger into his heart. It was from the boy’s mother, writing him from a death camp. Every prisoner was destined to die in a short period of time; the men killed on the day of arrival and the young girls separated out and given to the soldiers for a few days to do with as they pleased before they were killed as well. The old women and children were barely kept alive, starving, and slaving for the soldiers until they were eventually herded into a building where they were killed by poison gas. The soldiers would not waste gas on just a few people, so sometimes a month or so would go by before they had enough women and children to fill the building. As the creature recalled this nightmare in light of its recent exposure to my inner work, its conscience began to bother it, and there was a definite change in the monster’s heart as it began to read a condemned mother’s last letter to her son: “My dearest son, I hope this letter finds you safe. We are all well, arriving here last month. Your father has a job at the camp keeping the fences repaired and your sisters are helping in the hospital. There is plenty of good food and we have been put up in nice houses. It is almost like home and we are like a big family. Anyway, we will not be here too long, and look forward to seeing you soon so we can to tell you of our adventures. I miss you so very much, and must to tell you how much I have always loved you. You were such a treasure to me ever since you were little and you have brightened my life so much. It is so hard being away from you at these times as I worry about you, as I always have, but trust somehow you are safe. I could not bear to know otherwise. Please take care of yourself and always be kind to others, for they all suffer greatly in their own ways. And please, always remember your mother, and how much she always loved you. Goodbye my son.” The beast glanced toward the front of the cave. Everything was silent; the only sound that could be heard was the creature’s deep, steady breathing. With the letter still in its claw, it sat down and stared at the floor, thinking of this anguished woman whose husband had just been murdered and daughters raped, knowing she and her grandchildren were soon to be killed as well. She had to touch her son one last time but couldn’t risk telling him of the horrors she had witnessed; the murders of her husband and two daughters and all of her people, for fear that her son would react angrily and do something that would endanger his life. And although she could not tell him the truth, her heart was breaking. She knew her time was short. With nobody to confide in, she reached out to the only thing she had left in the world, with a last letter that would never arrive. And although she courageously tried to keep the letter cheerful and full of hope, it slowly fell apart when she said had to say her last good-bye. The creature had merely understood with its head’ when I first told it of its previous lifetime, but now it had seen’ something with its heart, opening up a possibility that the beast could exit this hell realm and escape into the animal world. The only thing required would be for the monster to decide to do it, for it was only the creature, itself, that was holding back a change of heart. I sat in silence waiting for the hell being make its decision. Would it continue down its path of certain destruction, or would it embark on a difficult journey to certain freedom? ~ Grace ~ It’s a known hush-hush fact that if you’re to be considered a success story in the Armenian community, you need to graduate from medical school, law school or business school. If you go a little left field, you could still make your parents proud by becoming a real estate king. I didn’t fall within any of those parameters and that’s why my first girlfriend left me. For clarity’s sake, we’ll refer to her as oh I don’t know, Grace after the princess of Monaco. After meeting her online, we set up a romantic rendezvous at the botanical gardens at UCLA. The relationship developed over the course of a month and over many secretive meetings in libraries, parks, parking lots, bridges, tunnels and book stores. The secrecy was due to the fact that her parents could not, under any circumstance, find out that their daughter was dating a filmmaker. Oh my! She would remind me that they were old fashioned and they needed to be broken into the idea that a filmmaker wasn’t quite the equivalent of a rock star. The idea of being a rock star was quite foreign to me, but I assumed they referred to sex, drugs and always being away from home. And if that was the case, a rock star and a soon-to-be medical student wouldn’t be the smartest match. She quickly joined the hundreds of voices in my head who kept discouraging me by saying things like “It’s who you know and you don’t know anyone,” “It takes money to make money.” She believed with every ounce of her being that I would bring shame to her family, close friends and that I could never compete with her ex-boyfriend who was now a paramedic. On Tuesday, March 2002, at four fifteen in the afternoon, on a I-kid-you-not stormy day, she dumped me. Reason being, the profession I had chosen was not worthy of her standards. Is this why there are not a lot of Armenian Filmmakers? Because it’s not a respected career? Because it’s impossible for an Armenian to make it in the industry and because there is no money in it? Was this only her opinion or was it the general Armenian consensus that Hollywood is out to ruin a man and his family? That it’s filled with more sharks than opportunities? That the only way to sustain yourself is at the expense of your spouse, preferably a rich one? That you’ll turn into a drug-addict, a sex-fiend, a bum of a husband and ultimately a failure as a human being? It is natural for Armenians to be hesitant not to say terrified by the idea of jumping into the film industry. After all, only a handful of us have chartered through these waters. I’ll admit, this thought excited me beyond belief. What an exciting time this was to explore these new territories. What an achievement it would be to become the first Armenian to win an Academy Award for best Director. Then, I could go knock on Grace’s door or better yet, her parents’ door with a couple of Oscars under my arm and I would ask their daughter out on a date. Yes, that’s it! My mission was now set, with an army of one, and the will of a lion, I was going to conquer Hollywood. ~ Beginnings of a Filmmaker ~ I was born in Iran in the late seventies and although I don’t recall much about the country or the break of the Islamic revolution, there is one thing I do remember: a man by the name of Rezah. Every Tuesday night, this man
Arguing - what’s it good for? Arguments are rarely “won.” When you think you won an argument, what did you win? The “loser” at least learned something, right? But what did you get? Debating practice, ego satisfaction, and diminished brain power. Arguing Diminishes Brain Power? At times things need to be debated, but most of the time, it just isn’t productive. You may want to argue the point, but what do you get from a useless debate, and more importantly, what do you lose? I say you lose effective brain power. There is at least one thing we can probably agree on. That is that a person listening to arguments can learn something from both sides. Now what about the participants? When your opponent makes a really good point, do you say, “Hey, you’re right!” and learn something, or do you more often just look for a better argument? You see, arguing too much gets you in the habit of looking for arguments more than for truth. You get deeper into a rut the more you defend a position, because any hint of opposing evidence is pushed away as a threat to your “victory” or correctness. Ii being in a rut and ignoring the truth doesn’t sound like it’s good for brain power, it’s because it isn’t. Brain Power From Listening Say the moon is closer, and if I say the sun is, one of us has to be right. On the other hand, if you say nurture is more important, and I say nature is, we’re both sort of right. That’s because the first argument has clearly defined terms. This isn’t common in most arguments (and what’s the point of arguing with someone who thinks the sun is closer?). The second argument has to do with values, experiences, and poorly defined terms. We’ve seen different things in life, and we could spend a lifetime arguing the definition of “important.” Alternately, I could shut up and listen. In this case my mind becomes more powerful with the addition of your ideas and knowledge. Listening is the better way. How do you break the habit of arguing? Start by purposely asking for people’s opinions, and listen without saying anything. Ask them to clarify, but don’t offer one contrary idea. If you do this enough, you’ll be surprised at how much you learn. You may also be surprised by how difficult this simple technique can be, but it works. Tell me I’m wrong, and I may just listen to what you say without arguing. Steve Gillman has been studying brainpower and related topics for years. Due to the way society portrays white crime versus black crime, blacks are more likely to be arrested, got to jail, get longer/harsher prison terms, etc. the stereotypes that people, not only in society have, but also at the highest level of our justice system has, perpetuates this deadly cycle for men of color. It is very disturbing to realize that black life is expendable. Even more disturbing is the fact that this bias is in our death penalty system. There is an overrepresentation of black men on death row, not because they commit worse crimes, but because our justice system is racist. Statistically the punishment for crack is ten times more the punishment the cocaine. Statistically cocaine is used more often by whites, while blacks are high users of crack. Black men also get about 3 times more jail time for murder than a white men. The time in jail one receives can actually be determined by the race of their victim. A black man who kills a white women is more likely to get the death penalty then a white man who kills a black woman. For this simple reason the death penalty should be outlawed, not only because many innocent people die, but because blacks are more likely to get the death penalty (not to mention that the death penalty is not a deterrent). Basically our justice system is SHOT and there is evidence out there to show the bias in our so called justice system, but still nothing is being done about it and people are so utterly misinformed about the whole thing. (this article is also not to take away responsibility from the black community to keep kids off the street and prevent them from being swallowed by criminality, just reflective of something mainstream America doesn’t often talk about)
