How do you make the intangible real? How do you take an idea or concept, something that can’t be seen or touched, and convey its essence to others, quickly and easily? That challenge faces many of us in this age of information and knowledge marketing. In advertising and other marketing communications, we have to convince prospects to respond to words and ideas. Intangibility is a challenge I often face as I promote my communication products and services. My prospective customers can’t touch or see what I’m selling. It’s a factor in employee communication, as well as in marketing communication. After all, what are you selling when you ask employees to get behind the new plan or to work safely? Every once in a while I come across something that bridges the gap between tangibility and intangibility in a single bound. One of my former newsletter client companies developed software that provides stereographic (like 3-D) views of oil and gas reservoirs. Now, I’ve seen many of this company’s developments in reservoir simulation over the past 10 years or so, but this one was special. Why? Because to use this software, you put on 3-D glasses. Like the kind we wore in movie theaters in the 1950s, albeit much more sophisticated. For my client, the significance of the software is its ability to run on regular desktop computers, which makes it more affordable than existing software. For its customers, mostly engineers in oil companies, the view is the thing: it can make or save them millions of dollars. But for me, with my limited knowledge of software and reservoir simulation, the glasses were the thing. They transformed an idea into reality; well, virtual reality at least. If they choose to do so, they can use the glasses to bridge the divide between tangibility and intangibility. Obviously, they can’t print or display the views, as they do with other visualization software, but they can show the glasses. For those of us old enough to remember the 3-D movies of the 1950s, the connection jumps out at us (literally and figuratively). Or, you may recall the video game goggles that appeared at various times in the past decade. Whatever our experience, the glasses should trigger curiosity about the altered reality we find by wearing them. In this case, the glasses become a proxy for the software program. The glasses aren’t the program, but they convey its essence quickly and effectively. It allows prospective customers or clients to grasp the significance of an intangible product. So, real products can help us effectively communicate the essence of an intangible experience. Next time you’re browsing through a department store or mall, look at the products on display through new eyes. Look at them as prospective tools for demonstrating the essence of your intangible product or service. In summary, one thing can be a proxy for another thing, allowing us to convey the essence of an intangible through something others can touch or see. Robert F. Have you heard of the DVD called “the Secret”? Well, it isn’t such a secret anymore. The DVD was released in March 2006, and according to the Times Magazine, the DVD has sold 500,000 units within the first 6 months. Today it sells well over 5,000 copies a day! It ranked in Amazon’s Top 5 sellers during Christmas week; and a tie-in hardcover book just entered the Top 10 on the New York Times bestseller list. The amazing thing about “the Secret” is that you won’t find it in your local Blockbuster or Barnes and Noble, it is selling briskly through new age bookstores, New Thought churches like Unity and AGape and the official website at .thesecret.tv. “It’s become the biggest selling item in the 30-year history of our store” says Harmony Rose Allor, a buyer at West Hollywood’s popular metapjysical bookshop, The Bodhi Tree. It is “word of mouth” marketing at it’s best. So what is the secret to “the Secrets” success? It is a “transformational movie”, where a person’s view on life and the laws of life will no longer be the same after watching this movie. In a sense, it has created the same kind of effect as “the Da Vinci Code” and the 2004 hit cult movie “What the Bleep Do We Know”. The movie has created such waves that it has already been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live and the Ellen DeGeneres show. At the core of the movie is a central philosophy called “the Law of Attraction”. In fact, the movie itself was inspired by this very same law when the producer read the book called “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace D. Wattles. This book was written in 1910! This philosophy states that we create our reality, both good and bad! The message is delivered through 24 teachers which include prosperity preachers, chiropractic healthers, relationship gurus, life coaches and motivational speakers –into one clear, cohesive voice. The movie is a “must watch” for anyone interested in taking charge of their life and in creating the life of their dreams. Following on the success of the Secret, 3 of the core teachers - namely Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield and Michael Beckwith. have collaboated to produce a wealth building program called “the Secret Science of Getting Rich Seminar”. This program is based on the book that inspired the movie and is set to make history as the fastest selling personal development program in history. What is the Science of Getting Rich about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, “The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard the work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learrns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich”. The Science of Getting Rich is all about teaching how to do things in this “certain” way to creat wealth. The success of this program is built on several rock solid foundations. These factors include: phenomenal success of “the Secret” the timeless concepts from the Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D Wattles, the credibility of successful persosnal improvement teachers and New Thought leaders of our time, and the Internet as the distribution medium. Lexicography is an important branch of linguistics, which covers the theory and practice of compiling dictionaries. The history of lexicography of the English language goes as far back as the Old English period where its first traces are found in the form of the glosses of religious books with interlinear translation from Latin. Regular bilingual English-Latin dictionaries already existed in the 15th century. The first unilingual English dictionary, explaining words appeared in 1604. Its aim was to explain difficult words. Its title was “A Table Alphabetical, containing and teaching true writing and understanding of hard usual English words borrowed from the Hebrew, Greek, Latin or French”. The volume of 120 pages explaining about 3000 words was compiled by Robert Cawdrey, a schoolmaster. The first attempt at a bigger dictionary including all the words of the language, not only the difficult ones, was made by Nathaniel Bailey. He published the first edition of Universal Etymological English Dictionary in 1721. It was the first to include pronunciation and etymology. The first big explanatory dictionary “A dictionary of the English language in which the words are deduced from their originals and illustrated in their general significations by examples from the best writers” was compiled by Dr. Samuel Johnson and published in 1755. The most important innovation of this dictionary was the introduction of illustrations of the meanings of the words by examples from the best writers. Pronunciation was not marked, because Samuel Johnson was very much sure of the great variety of the English pronunciation and thought it impossible to set a standard there. He remained an unquestionable authority for more than 75 years. The Golden Age of lexicography started in the last quarter of the 19 century when the English Philological Society started to work on compiling The Oxford English Dictionary. The objective was to trace the development of the English words from their original form in Old English. Where they were not found in Old English, it was shown when they introduced into the language. For words and meanings which have already become obsolete the date of the latest occurrence is provided. The English of G. Chaucer, of the Bible and W. Shakespeare is given as much attention as that of the modern authors. The completion of the work required more than 75 years. The result is a kind of encyclopedia of the language used not only for reference but also as a basis for lexicological research. Curiously enough, the first American dictionary of the English language was compiled by a man whose name was also Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson, a Connecticut schoolmaster, published in 1798 a small book entitled “A school dictionary.” This book was followed in 1800 by another dictionary by the same author, which showed already some signs of Americanization. It was Noah Webster, universally considered to be the father of American lexicography, who embodied in his book the specifically American usage of his time. His great work, The American Dictionary of the English Language, appeared in two volumes in 1828 and later sustained numerous revisions. In many respect N. Webster follows the lead of S. Johnson, the British lexicographer. But he has also improved and corrected many of Johnson’s definitions. He attempted to simplify the spelling and pronunciation that were current in the USA of the period. He devoted many years to the collection of words and the preparation of the accurate definitions. Webster realized the importance of language for the development of a nation, and he devoted his energy to giving the American English the status of an independent language, distinct from British English. At that time the idea was progressive as it helped the unification of separate states into one nation. Webster’s dictionary enjoyed great popularity from its first editions. This popularity was due to not only the accuracy and clarity of definitions but also to the richness of additional information of encyclopedic character, which had become a tradition in American lexicography. Soon after Webster’s death two publishers and booksellers George and Charles Merriam, acquired the rights of his dictionary from his family and started the publication of revised single volume editions under the name Merriam-Webster. New writers are always looking for a way to get their name and work into the public eye. Did you know that writing contests are a great way to do that? Writing contests can provide several advantages to writers. Winning a contest is a great way to get your name in print and in front of potential readers. It also provides you with professional credits for your writing portfolio, and prize rewards to increase your income. But even just participating can get a new writer into a writing regiment. It helps to grow confidence and provides a new writer with practice, practice, practice. No matter the reason for entering a writing contest, you should be realistic about your expectations. The odds of winning are not terrific, but there are ways of improving those odds and stacking them in your favor! You should start with flair! A complicating situation or an unsolved problem makes the reader want to know how the story is going to turn out. If the first page - more specifically the first paragraph- doesn’t make the judges want to read more, you’re in trouble. Judges will generally weed out entries by discarding those where the first page does not compel them to read on. Your story should stand out. A well written entry with originality is the best way to do that. Find an original angle or an unusual twist. Create offbeat characters, or use an unusual setting. The judges are looking for something new - not the same old storylines. They have to have a reason to notice your work. Your characters have to be believable and authentic. Their dialogue should be relevant and it should move the story along. They should talk naturally and convincingly, not stilted and awkward. The beginning, middle, and end is a must. A clear central theme should be followed throughout the entire story. If you’re unable to define your theme in one sentence, rethink it! A positive ending should be delivered. This doesn’t mean “happily ever after” (unless you’re writing romance, in which case “happily ever after” is almost a rule), or happy and upbeat, but if should be openly and plainly expressed and have a positive meaning to it. Proofread! Before you submit your entry, you should proofread and check for errors in spelling, grammar, sentence and story construction. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, have someone else do it for you. Neatness is important. Your entry should identify you as professional and capable, no matter your publishing history. Enter your story as soon as possible - well before the deadline. Many judges read entries as soon as they arrive and early submissions will certainly have them more engaged than entries that arrive after they have already read hundreds of other submissions. Read submission guidelines extremely carefully and make sure your entry complies in every way. If your entry breaks rules set forth by the contest, it will not be looked at. Don’t put yourself in that position! Don’t make yourself lose before the story is even read! Increase your odds of winning! If guidelines state that more than one entry is allowed, go for it! You’ll increase your odds of attracting a judge’s eye. Contest judges are looking for stories that involve the reader. If you can make the reader laugh, think, or cry, odds are the judges will too. You could have a winner on your hands right now! Amanda Baker writes for All Things Pondered: AllThingsPondered.com
I hate to share this, but I love watching infomercials. And I’ve ordered more than once from them! Everything from cosmetics to a cell phone accessory. When pressed, my friends admit the same. If you sniff around most people’s homes, you’ll find SOMETHING ordered from an infomercial, whether it’s the Ronco Rotisserie or Victoria Principal’s skincare. You may think of these often annoying programs as “trash TV”, but think again. Did you realize that they use many of the exact same strategies that we should? Now, I don’t mean you need to scream at your customers or flash “$19.95″ in blinking digits on your website! Those are gimmicks. But what most people don’t realize is that many of the STRATEGIES that sell the kitchen doohickey gadget are the same ones that can also sell your products and programs.) Here are 7 of my favorites: 1. They grab your attention. Infomercials air on the most challenging medium there is out there: television. You’re just a second away from your prospect clicking their remote to the next channel. So they do their best to get your attention right away and KEEP it for as long as possible. That’s why infomercials give bold statements and emphasize how this doohickey will change your life. You should do this too — stop beating around the bush and make it clear to your prospects how your products and services will change *their* lives! 2. They give tons of real-life testimonials. You’ll see that TV infomercials have evolved greatly since years ago. It used to be one or two people talking to a camera for the entire time. These days most typical 30 minute spots are over 80% customer testimonials! And that’s for good reason… they are the hands-down BEST way to gain instant credibility. A great example is for one of those home exercise machines. I noticed years ago they just showed the super-ripped guy using it on the infomercial. Now they show that guy, PLUS dozens of before and after testimonials from real-life guys with beer bellies and real jobs who used the product with success. That was a great move on their part, because c’mon, I just can’t believe that super-ripped guy got that hot looking using it just 30 minutes, 3 times a week! 3. They use personalities. The most successful infomercials now use celebrity guest hosts. They know this gets people’s attention more than practically anything out there. Pro Activ uses Jessica Simpson. Youthful Essence (a skincare product I love) uses Susan Lucci. Even NutriSystem is now using Dan Marino in their commercials to target men. You can do the same in your marketing. You can either hire a star, or even better, make YOURSELF the celebrity… by sharing stories, being personal, and having fun with your market. 4. They give an irresistible offer. It’s rare these days to see an infomercial asking for you to pay for something in full. You’ll mostly see things like “3 payments of $19.95″ or “4 payments of $39.95″. Why? Cash-crunched Americans are always more concerned about cash flow than the total price. They’ll even happily pay much MORE in the end in order to gain a lower monthly payment! You can do the same. Offer a payment plan for your products, courses, workshops, and coaching. You’ll be AMAZED at the increased response, and it’s easy to do with marketing-savvy shopping cart systems. 5. They give a strong call-to-action NOW. These folks know that as soon as you change the channel, you’re going to forget about their product. So they make it very urgent that you pick up the phone and call them now or visit their website and order. They usually say something like “If you call in the next 10 minutes you also get…” and they list a few great bonuses. This isn’t just specific to TV. Everyone would rather put off ANY decision these days, we’re all so busy and overwhelmed! So you need to give people a good REASON to act now, whether it’s a discount that expires, a payment plan that expires, a limited number of products or seats, a special bonus… you get the idea. 6. They sell on continuity. What’s “continuity”? online newsletter it’s when you make ONE sale that results in multiple charges over and over. For example, because my friends have been raving about I.D. Bare Minerals natural makeup, I recently ordered a kit from their infomercial. Now, every 2 months, I receive a fresh supply in the mail, and my card is charged again. I love it because I don’t have to remember to reorder. They love it because they only had to make ONE sale, and how they’ve got me as a customer forever until I cancel! Hear me now… continuity will change your life! Consider how you can use this principle in your business. Could you convert some of your current offerings into a monthly membership? Or instead of doing one-shot teleseminars, create an ongoing monthly program? (I did this with my Marketing & Motivation Mastermind.) 7. They repeat themselves. And repeat themselves. And repeat themselves again! Smart marketers know it takes an average of 9 TIMES for someone to see/hear your message BEFORE they will even consider purchasing! That goes for you too. So many of my clients complain that advertising doesn’t work when they only ran one ad ONCE. Or published ONE newsletter and it didn’t get them results. Remember it’s the ongoing exposure and repetition that breeds familiarity and trust with your prospects! And that leads to more sales than you’ve ever imagined. Online entrepreneur Alexandria K. Answering this question is probably as ambitious as trying to assess the actual overlaps between the three worlds, and it’s likely being done by some scholar or other. We delay this type of digging until after our retirement because we’re on the hunt for something far more exciting; Niches! Black holes! Undiscovered territories! Setting off on this kind of quest, it’s difficult to bypass the most obvious elements in the history of mankind that might contain just the lifesaving elements one needs to survive the journey. So here’s a tiny advance on the retirement, senility included. In our daily searchings on the web, we are all more or less like the hero of what is widely accepted is Europe’s first novel Don Quixote. Don Quixote and his pal chased after windmills, mistaking them for giants and went on a series of similar lunatic trips. Perhaps it’s the excessiveness, perhaps the numerous side tracks, but surfing in a sea of information can render even the sanest of persons to succumb to similar lunacies as those suffered by the two Spanish gentlemen. There are more striking similarities between Don Quixote’s adventures and the modern internet - in both you often don’t know where one saga/browsing expedition begins or where another one ends. Furthermore, Quixote offers an abundance of contradiction, imagination beyond what is ordinary, subplots here there and everywhere. And despite the book’s age, the concept of interaction was already born; there’s real interaction between the author and the characters! Somehow the author managed to make his intervention and direct communication with the reader as natural as you clicking on the links on this page! It’s no violation of the characters or of the story itself. Isn’t it great that europe’s oldest novel should be offering us such a richness in story technique? But let’s not get too carried away. Besides adding a nice heroic feel to the world of the web, we fear that in a practical sense, the comparisons to Don Quixote more or less allude to merely the lesser aspects of cyber space. Because, what pleasure is there to be derived from knight errant-like experiences when that’s exactly what a browsing excercise really boils down to when you need to get information of vital importance or when you get that high ranking listing your business needs to survive? The character Don Quixote, despite offering great insights into the author’s ingeniously laconic reaction to the writings of his era (even Sigmund Freud apparently skipped classes to read the book), does in the end perish as a result of his suicidal life style. Somehow it is less than reassuring that even though Europe’s first official novel is an interesting account of lunacy, the rest of the stream of works unleashed on readers have not really been overly occupied with the subject of madness. The very nature of cyber reality dictates we follow on from where we started. This is where the old world and cyber space go their separate ways. The way the web is structured is far from ideal and this does affect us as grassroots level. But what if we got things wrong at this stage? The deflation in the dot.com sector indicates a lot of misunderstandings were prevalent in the initial take off of cyber space. People interacting with their search engines are having a hard time actually finding efficiently what they are looking for. Where is the interactivity that actually connects in such a way that we find what we are looking for to the same degree the potential of our technological tools promise? Making the best of things the way they are at the moment is to devise a way to stand out from the crowd in cyber space. But where to begin? Researching the status quo of internet marketing is a good starting point because the marketing guys are there to bridge the gap between companies and customers. The main theme of marketing studies at the moment is customer research. A lot more money gets spent on consumer behavior than before the deflation of the dotcom sector. The trend is driven by companies turning to quantitative analysts to find hard and decisive numbers about their actual consumer markets. Here goes, the more you can fragment a market, the better one’s chances (of at least having a degree of control over it). Nothing new. What is new is the way marketers are devouring the data, dissecting it like biologists would owl droppings. Hopefully, interpretations of the findings are not exactly stomach turning but contributing to better interactive patterns. So this is where we are - at the beginning of an understanding-based approach of customers. The trend has been termed ‘new marketing’ or ‘behavioral marketing’. Wonder how companies translate this into their strategies? What we see is that there’s a general trend toward aiming to gradually reach higher click/sales conversion rates from marketing campaigns, rather than going for quick sales (the strategy before March 2000). Apparently, the focus is more long term and on an increased understanding of what brings buyers to their decision. Marketers say it’s back to the drawing board throughout the bank. The very beginnings of the buying funnel are now researched in greater depth. It is good to keep in this mind when you are getting to grips with cyber culture. Search behavior is the focus of a lot of market research, if only because so much information that comes out of this has yet to be capitalised on.
